Which is the best fat burning exercise?

I've been going to the gym for absolutely ages now and go through phases of which cardio machine I like best. Used to be the bike, then it was the crosstrainer, now it's the running machine, but I know it will change again. Anyway, I just want to know, which of the following is the best fat burning exercise:

Running at a slow/medium pace (6mph/8kph)

Walking up hill on the treadmill (as high up as it will go which is level 15, whatever that is) (4mph/6kph) - I do this holding on to the handles of the machine though as I would find it rather difficult to manage to walk up hill at that level without doing it.

Crosstrainer - Level 8. Again, I do this holding on.

(I have guessed what kph is as I'm not too sure, my gym machines go in mph).

I don't have much fat to lose as I'm 5ft 2 and only weigh 8 stone (about 112lbs) so I do a lot of weights as well. I go to the gym about 3 times a week minimum, although this week I have been 6 times as I go on holiday next Saturday and I usually do 1 hour of cardio, sometimes on 1 machine, sometimes on various, and then I do 45-60 mins of weights.

Keep on changing machines the way you do now and thats the way to go to avoid the body from getting adjusted to any one routine. Everything sounds rosy :)

Also, is it best to alternate between cardio and weights? I usually do most of my cardio at the beginning and then maybe a little bit more at the end but is it better to maybe do 20 mins cardio, 10 mins weights, 20 mins cardio, 10 mins weights etc etc?

There are a million ways to train. Your original question was "what is the best fat burning exercise?" To that I will answer- strength training.

For every pound of muscle we have, it burns 35-50 calories per day. Cardio is important. Keep changing your routines. That keeps your body from plateau'ing. Not sure that is spelled correctly :)

Usually it's a little better to warm up, then strength train, then do cardio. That way you can give your strength training routine a fresh set of muscles. If you do cardio first and then strength train, you are working with tired muscles.

Just keep working out :)

I rekon the cross trainer is the best!

The Bike uses alot of leg action and so does the treadmill.
The cross trainer gets your arms moving therefore getting your heart rate up because your using your long levers arms and leg at the same time. And your heart pumps harder to get the blood to those leg and arm muscle which burns more calories.

what machine or method you use does not matter one bit, so long as your activity level is the same, or an optimal level. To what's optimal is easy to find around here. In addition doing strengh training immediately followed by cardio is not optimal, the two should be seperated, but the order in which to do them is correct.

Cardio immediately after strength training is not optimal for some goals, but if the goal is general fitness and weight loss it is fine to do strength training and then a short cardio session.

It should not be a HIIT session or anything of the sorts. But 5-20 minutes of medium intensity cardio after a strength session is not bad. Just my opinion.

Weights, then cardio. Weight training will use up the stored energy (glycogen) in muscles. When you then follow with cardio, you'll likely be burning stored fat.

However you can't burn fat efficiently enough to fuel weight training, so weights, then cardio...but preferably do them on different days, or many hours apart.

long cardio after weights can leave you in a catabolic (muscle wasting) state. the more muscle you retain, the easier it becomes to burn off fat.
