Where to Begin?

Hey guys I'm new to the forums. I decided to skip the "Introduce Yourself" section and come straight to this thread. Alright, so I'm 18 and VERY out of shape. Here's some details about me...

Height = 6'2"
Weight = 200 lbs (Could be more or less, my scale is off I think)
Sex = Male
Diet = Needs work

I'm a pretty big guy. I used to play hockey and football. Really I just need to build some muscle and burn the fat. I can admit most of my issues are from being lazy. I also had severe depression and anxiety which overall added to me not trying to workout. But honestly, I have no clue where to begin! I definitely need Cardio, and I need to get rid of a lot of upper body fat (Belly, Lovehandles, Moobs). Only good thing about me is I have giant legs which are all muscle (I really don't know where/how it got there). My friends tell me "go to the gym". I have a habit of going to the gym, feeling great, and not returning...I live in Florida also, and the heat is killer. I just need some direction on what to do to get my body back in shape and shedding pounds.

Thanks,
Jonathan

It isn't as fun as working out, but honestly, working on your diet is the place to start. It is really difficult to out-exercise a bad diet; even a fairly big guy can't exercise that much.

Small changes that you can maintain are likely the place to start, and you will get a bigger bang for your efforts if you focus on getting the junk out of your diet, although, it is likely that you will miss it a lot at first.
- Try not to drink soda's - can't stop all together? Limit yourself and then wean off.
- Stop eating fast food - skip the french fries, skip the "biggie size" offers
- Don't snack on processed foods (chips, crackers, candy). Snack on veggies and fruit.

If you are the kind of person who needs rules, consider picking a diet plan such as "primal" and dive in. Otherwise, try and focus on real food.

As for exercise, I really recommend finding some activities you love to do - so much easier than just "working out". What about joining a summer sports league? Pick some local races, sign up, and then train for them (running, cycling, swimming - or all 3 - heck, do a tri!)

Good luck and welcome!

You cant go wrong with one of the 5x5 variants as a starter. For example:

If you are going to start exercising, or increase the intensity of your exercising it is not wise to dramatically reduce calories at the same time as you will simply run out of energy. I suggest, for now, you just keep eating similar amounts but clean it up by taking out processed foods, fizzy drinks etc and replacing them with fresh vegetables, whole meats and so on.

I would suggest setting out some goals and a plan you can follow. I find that without it, you can easily loose focus quickly and self discipline.
