Where should My heart rate be at?

I'm 20 years old and about 320-325 pounds.
What should My heart rate be at while on the elliptical/treadmill?
Usually it stays around 145-160 after 160 it starts to beat real hard on my chest so I slow down. but I've been told to consult people to find out because if i'm wrong I could godforbid get something wrong with me.

A site said keep it between 100-160.. i was on the elliptical and there's a bar to tell you where your heart rate is at and mine was on the bar right before PEAK HIGH heart rate and i tried to keep it below there a few bars to cardio. is this right? i'm like 5'7 in height. fat burning is very low on that scale on the meter.. so when i workout it's on cardio because going slow hurts my legs more than going fast! :(

please help me figure out what HR i should be between!
