when doing sit-ups...

I wouldn't say it's a big no-no if you're just getting a better workout without it. Some people simply can't do it without a counterweight - and when I worked with a trainer, we always used one -- but at the same time, we very rarely did straight sit-ups :)

Hi all, i am new so play nice! :)

If situps are so bad, then what do you suggest? Perhaps that would be a better answer than mocking, some of us are new to exercise you know

Crunches (and all variations), hanging or lying leg raises, stomach vacuums and side raises are all better ab exercises than sit ups. But even then, some people would say that these are no good either, and you should do things like dragons and wheels (I can't remember the proper names for those). Once you can exercise your abs properly you should add weight by holding a weight plate behind your head.

i agree. crunches and reverse crunches to get started but then add variety.

besides what was mentioned, planks, side planks, even farmers walks holding the weights above your head and walking. wickedly fun :D

Dragons and wheels? What are those?

A wheel is just that lol It has handles on both sides of the wheel and you kneel up with the wheel in your hands and you wheel out in front of you and back.

Can you picture it? :D

Ah yes, I remember those... a friend of mine has one. Personally, I think bodyweight exercises are usually enough and although weighted crunches (and variations) are also excellent, I don't think that ab rollers are really necessary.
