Whats a healthy fat percentage?

Hello Everyone,

Could anyone tell me an healthy fat percentage for a teenage athlete? How would I figure out that information too? Thankyou:)

I thought he meant skinfold fat percentage... That would be 12-18 for a male and 18-24 for a female...

:)

I think you're looking for the percentage of fat in the body. For a male the minimum percentage of body fat that is healthy is about 4%-5% body fat, because the body needs a little fat to function properly, for the females is a little higher at it's about 8%. I hope I helped

Dude,

That is too low for most folks. The surgeon general and many certification organizations agree that 12-18 for a male and 18-24 for a female is a healthy range. Of course you can be lower and your male range is the minimum safe BF%... But, women who get below 12% (depending on body composition and somatype) can and do loose their period and have other health issues.

I'm sure you heard about the book Burn the Fat , feed the Muscle by Tom Venuto, it's really famous. I read it in his book He states that it's alright if you have body fat level not less than 5% for male and about 8 or 9% for women. Look at all this body builders, running backs, athletic sprinters, they all have like 5 or 6% bodyfat. They all have excellent structured bodies with muscles and a 6-pack or maybe an 8 pack that can be clearly seen. They don't seem to have any health issues, so I guess that you got the wrong information from somewhere , DUDE :).

Umm... no. I've also been reading Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, but I don't know where you're getting your information. In his book, Venuto says that 9 - 12% body fat is for competition ("ripped") and this is not a year-round measurement.

Quoting him, "With few exceptions, most women who try to maintain their body fat levels at or below 10-13% can have problems with estrogen production, their menstral cycles and reproductive systems become disrupted and bone density may decrease, putting them at higher risk of osteoporosis as they grow older."
