After how much time?
is it okay to have lunch after heavy exercise?

actually i am losing weight by yoga, lost about 25 pounds in past 3-4 months...

i wanna continue... so i need expert opinion...

should i wait for an hour or two before eating after exercise...

:hurray:

Wait about 15 mins, have a rest and relax to settle the muscle down and heart rate. It is good to eat & drink after exercise in the right amount of time restore your loss of water and glycogen after exercise to repair refresh yourself.

Yoga probably isn't all that glycogen depleting.

I'd say you're splitting hairs. Eat as soon as you'd like after your exercise.

I'm glad you're enjoying yoga, but I doubt it's the primary driver behind your success on the scale so far. Your control of nutrition is more likely the primary driver.

Either way, congrats.

Hey guys... thanks for your responses...

Steve, i have been one of those who always wanted to lose weight but could not never succeed, for years... gym, dieting i have tried it all... by yoga i meant yoga of physical type... i know it for sure that it is yoga which slimmed me down... coz frankly i never control my diet too much during these days... i just avoided sweets... i guess you will get a better idea about the power of yoga once you study it well... since i said i tried it all, in my opinion Yoga is the best way to lose weight. :)

Study it? No offense but I'm well versed in the adaptational capacity of the human body. How do you propose yoga led directly to fat loss more so than your avoidance of sweets?

I'm not looking to argue, so please don't read me the wrong way. I'm genuinely interested in your opinion.

Steve... i never said about studying human body... i told u about studying yoga and its utility for weightloss...

and as far as my weightloss is concerned, i am the best to person to know how it happened? :) no one can lose so much of weight just by avoiding sweets, obviously... had it to happen that way i would have been skinny since long... and yes, i did not do anything new by avoiding sweets, i have been doing since loong... weightloss begun only after yoga... add to this i really eat very healthy meals... so i guess that should clear your doubt.

You are underestimating Yoga's utility in weightloss. yoga is not just about sitting, closing your eyes and breathing. its much much more than that.. Try extremely physical types of yogas... power yoga, suryanamaskaras, etc. trust me you will lose weight like anything.

Have you ever done yoga at first place? have u done surya namaskaras?

Regards,
Ankit

Power yoga it my opinion does make a great effect on losing weight. It's like in my Kung fu training when i attend the form of the variety of stances and hold them for quite a long period of time.

Holding a position where your muscles are under stress and strain for a period of time can tone your body and burn calories in the process. It is a great way to strengthen and improve your overall body health with inner relaxation and physical workout. :)

Well, I can't say much about Power yoga... But SURYA NAMASKARA is precisely the way by which I lost weight. I have been doing it from few months. Now I can do around 25 of them in 7 minutes and trust me - its tough. it makes you sweat and it affects the muscles of the places where most fat stays - hips and tummy... no words to describe how useful it has been to me!!!! :)

Steve... i never said about studying human body... i told u about studying yoga and its utility for weightloss...

What you're misunderstanding is the simple fact that all forms of exercise impose a stress on the human body. If enough stress is "mixed" with enough recovery, we adapt to said stress in a positive fashion. In terms of physique, this generally means less fat or more muscle. That's it.

I don't need to "study" yoga to understand the General Adaptation Syndrome in relation to humans and exercise. In addition, there's nothing special about yoga anymore than there's something special about lifting weights, running, etc.

That said, you're assuming I'm not well-versed in yoga which is an invalid assumption.

and as far as my weightloss is concerned, i am the best to person to know how it happened? :)

The subjectivity in this thread probably isn't going to lead to a meaningful conversation. Plus, I feel like you believe I'm slightly attacking you. Definitely rubbing you the wrong way, which isn't my intent. Anytime I speak on this forum, it's in hopes of helping people learn and think critically and objectively.

So please don't misread my intentions.

Again, I'm happy you're happy and you're realizing progress. I really am.

no one can lose so much of weight just by avoiding sweets, obviously...

Yea, actually they can. I'm not suggesting this to be optimal. Exercise carries a lot of benefits in general beyond weight control. That said, I've seen people lose 300+ lbs while not changing their activity patterns.

Weight loss is simply a matter of being in a negative energy balance. Said negative balance can come from a reduction in food, an increase in activity, or a combo of the two.

had it to happen that way i would have been skinny since long... and yes, i did not do anything new by avoiding sweets, i have been doing since loong... weightloss begun only after yoga... add to this i really eat very healthy meals... so i guess that should clear your doubt.

Not really. As explained above. Yoga doesn't offer any magical fat burning properties. Think of it like this. If you were in a positive energy state while doing yoga, you'd gain weight. It would be impossible to do anything but gain weight.

Yoga might have "worked" by helping you reach a negative energy balance but running could've done it, lifting weights could've done it, eating less could've done it, etc.

You are underestimating Yoga's utility in weightloss. yoga is not just about sitting, closing your eyes and breathing.

Show me where I suggested this.

its much much more than that.. Try extremely physical types of yogas... power yoga, suryanamaskaras, etc. trust me you will lose weight like anything.

Show me where I said something that led you to believe I'm unfamiliar with these.

And again, power yoga, suryanamaskaras, etc would not promote weight loss *if* you weren't in an negative energy state.

Have you ever done yoga at first place?

This probably would've been a good question to ask me before slinging all the presumptuous statements above, no?

Dear Steve,

I did not join this forum to argue with some loser nutrition expert who thinks he knows it all and is not ready to listen or respect opinions of others.

Your theories about energy balance and etc. are blah and i am not interested.

i know what i did and i know what i dint. you may have done yoga but you did not do it good enough to understand that it can be useful to lose weight. That is the exact reason why i assumed and i still believe that you dont know how to use yoga for weightloss.

and as far as asking things to you is concerned @ "This probably would've been a good question to ask me before slinging all the presumptuous statements above, no?" , what do you even think of yourself. This forum seems 2 be your playground for advertising about your newsletters, so if someone speaks in a direction away from yours, you expect them to give you all chances in ADVANCe to prove you to be the hero. Listen, I am not interested.

No need to dissect my posts into lines, and yes, if you feel you are irritating me by constantly arguing without any knowledge about me, you are right.

Guys, don't subscribe his newsletter, he is stupid.

Umm... you realize what you just did can and will get you banned around here. We don't allow personal attacks on this forum. Just because you're having trouble emotionally separating yourself from the debate doesn't give you the right to personally attack me.

Unfortunately for you, this is a public forum and because you don't understand critical thinking doesn't mean others aren't interested in dissecting the various topics objectively.

Sorry you seem offended. You've been warned about the insults. Consider it your first and final.

Take care.

Steve...

If you find my behavior to you challenging, its because of your own attitude and tone. You instigated me.

If you think things should be fair, some other moderator should have been the judge for this case. You can't fight your own fights, can you? LoL. It's so easy to just ban anyone. This is abuse of power, Steve.

You just beautifully proved what i said. This forum is being used by you to advertise yourself and your newsletter.

If you go through the thread, the point of our difference was that yoga can be a good exercise. I supported this and you said it isn't (yoga is not PROBABLY glycogen depleting. You said PROBABLY and you say you know Yoga well). You could not digest this, so brought your whole theories and stories into picture. What an egoistic person!

I really HAVE a life and i dont care about such forum - forum is more or less a reflection of its management.

Ban me, delete me, whatever! i might come around to post something in case i am interested, coz i think there must be some good and intellegent people here too. About you, I don't care. Sorry! :p

Anyways, grow up! lol ;)

Huge difference...

I "instigated" the topic at hand. Not you. This is a forum for the exchange of information and ideas pertaining to fitness. I don't care if it were the Pope saying the same things as you... I would've spoke up. My point is, you as an individual played zero role in my responses here.

If you think things should be fair, some other moderator should have been the judge for this case. You can't fight your own fights, can you? LoL. It's so easy to just ban anyone. This is abuse of power, Steve.

Fallacious reasoning aside, I did post this thread in the moderator forum since I handled it myself. If you'd like, we can get the other mod's opinions on this matter.

The fact is, you slung a personal insult which is a direct violation of forum policy. If you truly believe that was a subjective action, please feel free to contact any of the other mods and challenge the warning.

You just beautifully proved what i said. This forum is being used by you to advertise yourself and your newsletter.

You can believe what you want, that's fine. I spent years on this forum without a newsletter or a service and you're missing that fact. Frankly, I don't care what you think about me. This isn't a personal matter in my mind even though you continually try to make it one.

Ban me, delete me, whatever! i might come around to post something in case i am interested, coz i think there must be some good and intellegent people here too. About you, I don't care. Sorry! :p

There's really no need to apologize. Just stop breaking rules. And if you don't want to get in such a huffy next time, view things as objectively as possible.

Anyways, grow up! lol ;)

You think the factual points I've made in this thread are a matter of level of maturity? The red herrings and straw mans presented by you are blatantly obvious... I'm hopeful (and thankful) that we have an educated group on this board who will read this thread for what it is.

Some people don't' want to learn Steve, its too bad. Maybe its a pride issue, why this person is not willing to see this from another angle?

At any rate, banning the user would HARDLY be an abuse of power. This person needs to seriously educate herself.

Define "tone your body" please.

Referring to a more defined perception of your muscular appearance, but again for this definition fat must be removed. But in reality you are better off utilizing the lower section of your body with cardiovascular exercises for a more better achievement.

But yoga can certainly enhance some other concepts.

@Ankit

Show some respect to other members of the forum please. I might not be a moderator or known member but you came here to ask questions and we try and help you find the answers. But this cannot be done with a debate on issues which are generated by a personal view.

Thanks for the clarification. I wanted to make sure there wasn't a misconception at play where one believes there's a specific way to train to obtain that lean look. I'm glad to see that's not the case.

At the end of the day, what's in our control is the ability to gain and lose fat and muscle. How we look when all is said in done is primarily dictated by our genetics, unfortunately.

But in reality you are better off utilizing the lower section of your body with cardiovascular exercises for a more better achievement.

Can you explain this statement please? Better achievement of what?

But yoga can certainly enhance some other concepts.

No doubt.

Hopefully it's clear to those who are reading this thread that my intention was not to bash yoga. Based on a few private messages I've received, I'd say it's safe to say people are "getting it" when looking over this thread.

Can you explain this statement please? Better achievement of what?

A better achievement of losing weight or burning fat by utilizing the larger muscles in the body like the hamstrings and quadriceps to work in common exercises like running. Which then i was linking in to this "toned body" concept of removing fat for a defined look.

At the end of the day, a deficit is a deficit is a deficit. If you choose to do no cardio and focus on controlling nutrition to establish a deficit, fat will be lost just the same had you established your deficit with cardio or a combo of the two.

I'm not suggesting or promoting this idea. I bring it up simply to paint my picture.

We need to keep in mind the importance of both sides of the goal when it comes to toning; fat loss and muscle gain/maintenance.

Cardio isn't at all optimal (I'd stretch to say sufficient) for maintaining or gaining muscle. Sure, in completely untrained/fat populations, cardio alone can overload the muscles and promote muscle growth. In general though, we need to give our bodies a "stronger" stimulus to promote muscle growth/maintenance and that comes by way of more formal ways of training the muscles (read: strength training, which can come in many, many forms).

Fat loss without muscle maintenance/growth is probably going to lead to net results that people aren't happy with. It certainly doesn't lead to "toning" as most mean it.

Granted, I'm speaking very generally here but saying "cardio is better for toning" is a bit misleading since a) it's not great at promoting muscle growth/maintenance and b) a deficit can come by way of multiple avenues.

Good discussion though.
