What is the difference between a crunch and a sit up?

I tried doing a search for "crunches vs sit ups" but didn't find what I was looking for. I just read in one the stickies about getting a flat stomach using different kinds of exercises to target those muscles. I guess sit ups alone (what I had been doing) won't cut it, and the thread mention various crunch exercise, which led me to the question: what exactly is the difference between a crunch and a sit up? Now I'm thinking maybe I've been doing them all wrong substituting one for the other.
 
Crunches are more or less a half-sit up, and will give you a more of a workout. In a sit up, when you come all the way up, the high point will actually be giving you a rest before you go back down.
 
^ While the high point does give you a rest, I wouldn't say that makes it less of a workout. The sit up does involve more body movement, and rest-pause training is a perfectly valid way to train. Try breathing squats and tell me that a set of 20 that doesn't require the pause between reps is more of a workout.

Crunches are trunk flexion (ie the verterbrae curl forward) and little-to-no hip flexion. Sit ups are hip flexion (ie bending at the hips) and trunk flexion is often employed in the sit up, but in my opinion it should be ommitted from the exercise, just as it should be ommitted from almost every exercise.

Sweet. Thanks. Looks I've been doing crunches this whole, which I've always thought of as "lazy situps"
What other exercises besides crunches can I do to work out my abdominal muscles for a leaner looking stomach.
If I don't do something about my stomach now, people are going to start asking me when I'm expecting!--that's how bad my gut area is. :(
