What Is The Best Exercise ?

Hi , I'm newbie here. I would appreciate any member here who could tell me what is the best way to slim down my " elephant " leg and " spare tyre " ? I've been on diet but it seems no result. Please help .

I would think that brisk walking (a.k.a. power walking) is great for slimming down thighs, butt, and stomach, especially for beginners. If you're wanting something more rigorous, then jogging would work just as well, though it's harder on the joints. If you have joint problems (like I do), then I would stick to brisk walking, bicycling, and swimming. Those count for cardio workouts. It would be more effective if you teamed up those exercises with strength exericises that target those specific muscle groups, like ab crunches, lunges, and flutter-kicks. Good luck!!

Welcome TGM!

The short answer you're looking for is:
Any excercise that you enjoy doing on a consistent basis that well help you lose more calories.

But that is a very small piece of the equation

If you want fast, consistent fat loss its going to require a little work and learning but this is a great place for that!

and yes, unfortunately Steve is correct. You cannot pick and choose where you lose the fat

thanks, krissy for giving suggestion. Think I will opt for brisk walk and swimming ( has not been swimming for years .... lazy )

hi, thanks for replying. I hope I could have strong determination to stays on an exercise which I would enjoy .

yes Steve, many of my friends told me the same but I just dont want to believe it and hoping for miracle ( that there is a way to slim down where I want )

Managing expectations is pretty important in this whole process. Avoiding the inevitable sets you up for frustration, inconsistency and frustration.

IMHO....cardio mixed with deadlifts and squats. They tense every muscle in your body..head to toe. Thats all you need.

Unfortunatly (and I hate to hear this too) there is no one specific exercise that will target your legs or belly. The best thing you can do is eat healthy and exercise and begin a weight lifting routine. Remember, muscle burns calories all day!

Some exercises I really enjoy are the crosstrainer at the gym and spinning classes. I also love to kayak and ride bikes. My sister and I try to visit a different park or bayou every weekend to keep things mixed up.

Eventually, if you continue to eat healthy and exercise the fat will come off, but you never know from where.

:waving:

There are exercises that 'target' legs and belly.

There are no exercises that magically spot reduce fat though.

That's something entirely different.

Remember, muscle burns calories all day!

As does fat, organs and connective tissue.

Hold up - I'm usually fairly spot on about misconceptions - but i might be missing something here. Just to clarify - of course all cells use energy all day, but isn't it true that muscle cells use more energy in the day than a fat cell does?

You are correct. Sorry if I worded my statement confusingly.

When inactive though, muscle doesn't burn all that much more than fat from what I've seen. Based on the amount of muscle I've added over the years onto my frame, anecdotally I'd agree too.

Well what do ya know! I've always had this image of muscle sitting there burning away all my calories while I sit at a desk. Like "build up enough muscle and then you don't have to do anything for a week while it does it all for you!"

You mean I actually have to keep eating right and working out?! Bummer!

thanks everybody who has share your views , suggestions here . From those responses , there is one same point ..... No specific way to reduce fat from a particular part of the body though there is exercise specially for the leg and belly. Think I have to start a slimming plan for myself .. Hmm ..... I've just started to go on a small diet , I reduce carbo food like white bread , white rice ,noodle ,cake (ooh ...my beloved cheese cake ) and change to take whole-meal bread and brown rice. I also have started to exercise like sit-up ,and squatting for 15 mins per day . Now already 2 days since 1-10-2008. I hope I could be determined to continue to this plan of mine. Wish me success ,k ?

Haha, yea, I've gotten into it with some 'professionals' on here regarding their flawed science. A lot of people claim that for every pound of muscle you gain, you burn something like 50-100 calories extra per day.

If that were the case, my caloric requirements to maintain my weight would have increased drastically over the years.

It hasn't.
