What is the average...

Muscle gains in about 4 months. I am just curious on how many pounds I might put on from November 1st to Feburary 28th (4 months). Anyone make a guesstimate? I want to be up to 170-175, but I doubt ill gain that much. Any help?

This question is too general. What's average for you might not be the average for someone else. Factors like what you do in the gym, your diet, rest, bodytype and other things determine how much you'll be able to gain or lose.

2lbs a week OF PURE MUSCLE on a clean bulk seems a little high for consistent gainswithout 'help'.

a number I see tossed around is 5lbs a month of pure muscle. the better your eating, the better your recovery time...the better your results.

Muscle gain is much harder than fat loss. The first month you may be able to squeeze out 5lbs, but that is with some damn on target training and great diet. On average instead of it being 1-2lbs like for fat loss a week, its around
.5 to 1lb for pure muscle gain. In the beginning in can be a little more of course, but it levels out pretty quick.

Nothing has been more definite than this statement. In the past 2 months I have been getting stronger. And I have a good diet. A do full-body every other day. And I have barely gained about 2 pounds of muscle. Damn! I'm pissed.

If you're just beginning expect a gain in strength before mass. Your nervous system isn't efficient enough to fire intensely and fully stimulate the muscle. Once the nervous system catches up, your gains will come fast.

I think it really depends on at what level you are in lifting. Beginners will gain much faster than advanced trainees. Speaking with my friend, Todd Scarborough, who has held the title of Mr. Arkansas twice, he is elated if he gets a 5-10lb increase of lean muscle a year. He's been training for ~25 years.

I think 2lbs a week is a very high estimate. If we could consistently gain 2lbs a week every week, then we'd all be gaining 104lbs of muscle yearly.

I gained 14lbs of pure muscle last year. Working very hard and had a pretty good program. I think if my diet was perfect and I didnt spend 2 months cutting I could have managed 20-23lbs.

Most books a have read say you should aim for an average of 3lbs a month in your 1st year for your average Joe.

I have to agree with RLewis on this. I've always heard that if you are doing a clean bulk, you really shouldn't expect more than 2-3 pounds of REAL muscle a month. On top of diet and your routine, your body type and genetics play a big role in how much mass you will put on. It's always easiest in the beginning of a bulk stage to put on muscle, but after that first month, 2-3 pounds is a very very solid gain. It's a slow road, but doing it like that turns into 24-36 pounds a year...and that's a TON.
