What is better?

I was reading around between which is better, Treadmill or stationary bike. Ive been told bike burns more calories faster then the treadmill and is better for your joints in the long run.

Basically I want to loose weight for the summer, So from now to june 25th basically is my goal time.

I weigh 170lbs , and i wanna get to 160 or 150 within my goal time. If anyone could give me some tips, I know about foods and all, I'm just wondering about what machine would help me get there faster.

Either way, these machines have the capabilities to give you a thorough cardio workout. The calorie burning power of each depends entirely on how hard you intend to workout on said machine. I suggest you actually go up to your gym and try out each machine. Then, just pick out which one you like the best.

Also, if you end up picking one over the other... just be sure to give it your all whenever you go to workout. Coming out of a hard session on either will surely burn the calories you are desiring.

If you choose stationary bike, you might want to sign up for a 'spinning' class with a recommended spin leader. These sessions can be grueling and intense at some parts, but you'll come out sweating like no other, and feel good about your burned calories.

I would just run and ride my bike outside, and spend the money on some weights so that you can get a full body workout three times a week and do cardio 3-4 days a week.

That above coupled with a calorie deficit of around 300-500 calories a day you should be able to lose around 1lb a week, possibly more to begin with.

You say you "know about foods and all" so I assume you have calculated your BMR and then adjusted for your activity level so you have an idea of how many calories you are going to need to be in a deficit? :car:

Actually the treadmill "burns" more then the bike as your fully upright (higher heart rate= more calories burnt), you also move your amrs when you run and don't do this on a bike, you can move faster on a stationary bike...but its easier- theres less weight to push through (your not needing to move your entire body weight, your only moving as hard as you choose to put the bike) its also more mechanical on the bike- the movement is straight round in circles, theres not alot of "thinking" your your legs to do so they can become used to the exercise alot faster then on the treadmill where there is a chance to trip up over your own feet, run at different gradients, even though the treadmill is only about a foot wide, its more variation then being stuck along a preset predetermind route.

I'd say roughly speaking, 10 mins on the treadmill = 15 mins on the bike. Do the maths from there to workout what you need.

But like you say, the treadmill is a high impact exercise, it can cause injury if you over do it too early on at a greater rate then the bike. Also if you get things like shinsplints you will need to rest fully rather then slow down. I am not aware of any bike injuries aside from getting your laces caught up in the wheels or around the pedals as they move (this can be nasty if it happens though).

Its up to you- which do you think you will actually use more then the other?

If you really want to look your best, and burn the most fat, I would recommend ditching both the treadmill and bike, and taking up high intensity interval weight training. Doing so will have a much more dramatic affect on your metabolism throughout the entire day, and will also make you stronger as well. Let me know if your interested in this and would like more detail!

one is not better than the other. It is the effort you put into it. I would suggest high intensity intervals. they are a fast and effective way to burn fat and get lean(and there is science to back that up).

The best is to change machines, frequently. If you have to buy a machine, then the best one will be the one you like the most because that will be the one you mostly likely continue using. It doesn't matter if a machine is better than all the rest if you won't use it.
