I've noticed a time or two on this forum where someone says "Stone" along with their weight or whatever. WHAT does that mean ????

Those zany Brits!

Got a different word for lots of things!

Chips = French Fries
Bangers = Sausage

They spell funny too, always reversing their E's and R's! Like "centre" or "theatre" instead of "center or theater."

and adding unneeded letters too as in Colour - Harbour... Valour...

and the way they pronounce their Zees - just silly i tell ya -it's ZEEE not ZED :D

though they don't get as uppity as Joe and being Canadian does :)

Why can't everyone be like US? (puts on ugly american hat and prances around the room)

They pronounce Z Zed?
They say centre instead of center?
In that case, breaking news - they speak French!
I should know, it's my first language and that's how we speak.
I love the UK.

Anyway, thanks for clearing up the stone thing. I've always wondered what it meant, too.

An Irishman's Philosophy
In life, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you are well or you are sick.
If you are well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you will get well or you will die.
If you get well, there is nothing to worry about,

But if you die, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you will go to heaven or hell.
If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about.

And if you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands with all your friends
You won’t have time to worry!

Haha I'm English and I love threads like this! I always measure myself in stones and lbs - I will never submit to the fascist metric system regime!

Oh and don't have a go at us just because we spell words properly :p and yes, it is "colour", "armour", "metre" etc. So there!

Hi Guys,

Amusing thread!

I too like to measure myself in our good old British Stones, but it isn't a Patriotic thing...it just sounds so much better to say I need to lose 2 stone rather than 28lbs!!! :)

All the best,

Louise

Yeah, but saying that I lost nearly 130 lbs sounds sooooo much better than saying I lost 9 stone.....*lol*

LOL - It's a good job that the language that we speak is called English. :)

I see it as people forgetting to put U in words like colour. :) :) :)

And as far as the stones / pounds thing goes - it just gives those of us that weigh in stones and pounds more milestones to celebrate. Americans tend to just celebrate 10 pound boundaries - we celebrate those with our many friends - then we point out every half stone boundary and celebrate those too. We just enjoy the extra forum parties.

Start dividing your weight by 7 and throwing extra parties.

I'm English and I live in Wales and never, In my twenty years have I ever heard anyone call a sausage "Banger" I've seen/heard the Welsh call it "Saeslig" but never "banger" thats just silly.
Also Color doesn't look as nice as Colour I think, but thats just splitting hairs haha.

The whole converting stones to pounds thing was a bit confusing for me at first, but I've got used to it, However throw Kilos into the mix and then it really gets confusing :willy_nilly: haha.
I like Omegas way of thinking :D lets do it both ways aaaand parttyyy more HURRAH ^.^

Ha ha...being a Canadian, this issue is close to my heart! I always wondered why we insist on spelling things the British way in Canada (which as far as I can tell is just needlessly complicated.) And I always say "zee", but my mom gets super pissed at me, insisting that real Canadians pronounce it "zed". But zed doesn't rhyme.....

But zed doesn't rhyme.....

Actually - when I say the alphabet zed comes closer to rhyming with "em" which is the end of the previous line the way that we say it...

LOL - I cannot even manage to say zee in that context - I just automatically say eks, why, zed every time. Life must be tough for new generation Canadians - I couldnt alternate!!!...

However throw Kilos into the mix and then it really gets confusing

I dont think that even I would have the audacity to suggest that we should have a party every time that we could divide our weight by 2.2 - but maybe a party every 11 pounds and call it a 5Kg boundary party would have been a good idea. Damn - I missed some more great parties on the way down

Tell me about it....I grew up with kilos, then had to learn about stone, and on the board I need to convert it into lbs as well. And to make it worse, we've got pounds and kilos in Germany, but a German pound is not the same weight as a the American lbs....:banghead: *lol*
