What if no one were fat? (economics)

article on MSN said:
Imagine a lean and healthy America: The savings on medical, fuel, food and other costs would be enough to give every U.S. household more than $4,000.

Look at it this way: If no one were fat, more people would live into old age and require more years of constant health care instead of dying young. they would also and be a strain on social security;)

As with any "utopia" world, there comes a fundamental flaw. I really don't think obesity is as great of a problem as they say. I also don't think it cause as much deaths as they say. I think airliners put blame "large" people so they won't look bad for putting up ticket prices. Also, I don't get how productively will go up with non-fat people... I mean the reasons are entirely different from just being "overweight."

This report is ridiculous! I found myself laughing throughout the whole thing trying to figure out how they came up with these numbers.

Here is a quote from the article: "A death of diabetes and other diseases would save billions of dollars more -- and put thousands of doctors on the street. McDonald's would sell not Big Macs but little steamed chicken snacks -- or watch its profits melt away. Productivity would rise, potentially creating tens of thousands more jobs or higher wages all around."

1st of all, I know quite a few people who are not obese and have diabetes, you can't get rid of all diseases by losing weight. The author says in the same paragraph that not being overweight will put thousands of doctors out on the street, and that it will create thousands of jobs. Which is it? Also she says that the $55 billion weightloss industry would be out of business. How is this creating productivity?

Also if everyone was healthy and did not eat junk food, wouldn't that lose tons of jobs and companys? If everyone was eating fruits and veges, then the price would go through the roof for healthy food, not decreasing the amount of money we spend, but increasing it.

Here is another quote from the article: "The social gains are more difficult to predict. Research has shown that people who are not obese marry more, are paid more, are promoted more, sleep better and have better sex lives"

Not sure what her research is, but the people I know that are healthier tend to be happier with themselves and have a better self esteem, which makes them try to work out their marriage problems or be more careful about who they marry, instead of getting divorced and remarried mulitple times like this suggests.(I know people who have been married many times that are are both obese and healthy, this is just personal experience)
NBC Nightly News last week said that obesity is not a factor in getting a raise.

I found a few things I did agree with her on, but most of it is absurd.

I stopped reading this after she said that we could be slim and maintain our weight by eating 150 fewer calories a day, or only half a slice of pizza. I guess we can just cut our big macs and fries in half now too and expect to lose weight. This is probaly why she is writing for MSN and not the New York Times.

If no one were fat I wouldn't have "Inside Brookhaven Obesity Clinic" to watch on TV
Careful Gooch, some of "those obese poeple", are poeple. The average family has someone obese, someone probably with an eating disorder, someone with a drugs/alcohol problem.... the list goes on.
