What does 'squatting'' actually improve?

it works out ur whole leg

squats work out ur entire leg. Mostly ur quad, but ur hammy, buttocks and calf as well.
if you're an athlete theyre great because so much power comes from you legs. they also help with speed and vertical jump
if you're a body builder then...well...you'll have nice legs.

forgot to mention...they help with balance as well, which is one of the most important things...ever...

i was one of those who started out with flyes and curls and extensions and saw poor results. then when i started with squats, deadlifts and dropped all or most of the isolation stuff, boy what a difference. ;)

Aside from everything else that has been said, squats allow you to use a greater amount of weight than its isolation counterparts. It does raise test levels, but only for a short amount of time. The real benefit comes from the heavy, multi-joint aspect of the lift.

i keep hearing, dont let knees go past toes.. but then i can't go down very low, or is that the idea? I have the stereotype in my head of guys going reaaaal low down when squatting and back up.. or is the idea just t bend the legs slightly etc?

u want ur knees to stop bending just over 90 degrees. so like 95 degrees. if you go any deeper ull be damaging ur knees. also make sure ur toes and knees are pointing in the same direction.

Don't forget that squats also build up the lower back, and the abs (due to stabilizing the torso).
Make sure you keep an arch in your back, and stick you butt/hips out to help maintain proper form. Don't let your back curve/round or you'll risk a lower back injury.
