Weird Calf/Ankle Pain

Hi All,

OK, a quick background. I had been bulking for about 8 weeks, and wasn't doing any cardio at all, no running or HIIT. So I switched over to a cutting cycle, which means I was starting to do HIIT and runs again. On my cut earlier this year, I was running for 20 minutes after lifting, doing HIIT on 2 days, and then running 6-8 miles on one of the weekend days, never any problems at all.

This time around though, I ran once after lifting, no problems. Then ran 5 miles on Sunday, and my calves were messed up, right ankle felt weird, like I could feel the tendon stretching or some kinda creepy feeling. It got better over the week, and I was still able to lift on it, and even do some HIIT on the steps. So yesterday, it had been about a week, and things felt great, so I ran 15-20 mins after lifting. Right after finishing, my calves were real sore, and I could already tell my ankle was quirky again. I thought it would get worse overnight. Luckily, it's not nearly as bad as the first time after the 5 mile run. It's still weird though, calves are more sore than they should be, and the right ankle is not quite right. Is this just my body having trouble adjusting since I haven't been running for a couple months, or should I be worried?

Damn, it's always something with my body. It's like I'm not meant to be into fitness!

Sounds most likely that because you hadn't been running (or stretching I'm assuming) your ankle and calf are taking issue with the amount of weight (after bulking) they now have to support during a relatively high impact exercise. As you weren't working them while you bulked, the supporting musculature that develops in response to running probably dwindled due to the lack of exertion. My recommendation would be to ease into and lower your intensity and volume until you're not having this issue. However, if it persists longer than a week or two at the most, you need to give serious consideration to getting it looked at by a doc and taking some time off, as you could have a higher grade strain or sprain at the ankle joint.

OK cool, yeah your explanation makes sense to me, I hope that is just what is going on. From now on, I will take it easy, and shorten up my runs until I am not having any issues. If that doesn't help, I'll get checked out.
