Weight Training and Marathon Training

You don't see many endurance runners that have big upper bodies. However, I currently do and so am wondering what the balance should be better upper body weights and training the legs for endurance running

I weigh around 85kg with around 16% body fat so am in the normal zone in terms of %body fat but heavy because of muscle mass. I know if I drop 10kg then I will become much quicker at running, more lean and also the runs will be hell of a lot easier

Are you an elite, competitive marathon runner. While it's true that top marathon runners have very lean bodies, larger-built individuals are still able to run that distance.

For training, though, I wouldn't focus on muscle building, but rather on toning yourself and working on endurance. That way, you'll maintain that strength without cutting too much muscle, but while also making it possible to slim down a bit.

Thanks

What kind of routine would you recommend for this? I've been using PowerPlates a lot and doing lots of Ab work rather than weights

I suspect it is a case of lightening up the loads and doing more reps that high weights?

Yeah, that'll do the job for you. Also, the ab workouts aren't really necessary, considering that your abs don't have much function past the stability which they're already strong enough for. You should focus on your core in general, instead.
