weight loss cycle

Noob here, so apologies up front.

I am noticing a cyclic pattern in my weight loss and I wanted to bounce this observation off a this panel.

Background: On Mar 01 of this year I weighed in at 209 lbs. I am 6' 1", 38 years old, and generally active but prior to Jan 01 I ate with reckless abandon. My body fat was 25%.

Goal is to hit 13% body fat, which I have estimated to occur at my current pace right around 179 lbs. As of June 03 my weight is 189, so 20 lbs gone!!! Yea! Of no surprise is the fact that the last pounds are coming off much slower, but I suppose this was to be expected. My body fat right now is showing about 16% to 18% (scale is a little unpredictable, one of those Tanita models and I know they are not precise, so this is a relative thing I am aiming for).

I am very analytical about my eating now. I am vegetarian, and I concentrate on protein levels, keeping fats out, and moderate carbs. I tend to binge a little on Sundays, but I even keep the binging moderated.

So... my observations. I will go 2 to 3 weeks with consistent weight loss, dropping 2 to 3 pounds a week. Then, without really changing my intake or workouts, will hit a week where I don't seem to lose a thing and even gain a pound or two. Then, the cycle will start over. Kind of crazy, but it is proving very consistent.

My wife things I am not eating enough to support my workout routines, thus my body goes into a cyclic panic mode, trying to avoid starvation. I am not so sure, but I do attempt to limit my calories, especially carbs/sugars, and I admit I might go overboard from time to time. I concentrate my eating into the morning and afternoon hours and try to slow down come evening.

I try to keep my calories in at 2000 per day, give or take. But, actual numbers aside... if the intake is relatively stable and the workouts are relatively consistent, why would my weight loss be cyclic?

It could be that your body is adapting to your diet and exercise routine. Once your body adjusts, you plateau and it becomes harder to lose those pounds. Try to confuse your body - change up the snacks you eat or the ratio of protein/fat/carbs for a week. Maybe even eat poorly for a week or two, then get right back on a proper diet

You can also confuse your body through workouts. Try changing the intensity or length of time.

It seems like you only eat three meals a day. This tells your body it won't get food often and promotes slower weight loss. You should be aiming for 5-6 smaller meals a day instead.
