Weight-loss and weight maintenance with Hashimoto thyroiditis and PCOS… is it possible?

Hi guys,

I’m here because I’d like to both give and find some support.

I’m about to hit 40, have PCOS and Hashimoto thyroiditis (both conditions are notorious for weight gain, among other “perks”) and I started gaining weight on my belly for the first time in my life (could it be low estrogen and/or cortisol problems or is it just age?). What bothers me the most is water retention (my calves are huge), facial hair and weight gain. My periods are regular and painless.

My struggle with weight started when I hit puberty. When I got my first period (12/13 years old) my metabolism changed. It took some time for me to really start gaining weight but I noticed very soon that I was prone to water retention, especially in my calves.

My real problems with weight started in my twenties, just before my two conditions had been diagnosed. Ever since then I easily gain weight and have problems maintaining my goal weight.

I am at my wits end. I am 5.5 tall and weigh 142 lb. It may not look like too much, but my bone structure and built is such that I look and feel fat. More importantly, when I am this “heavy” my PCOS gets worse (mustacheL, for one :( ). I can’t get into any of my clothes and feel comfortable.

I’ve been extremely demotivated . I just don’t know what to do.

I usually start by juice fast (homemade juices, mostly veggies) and then move to raw diet, introduce cardio exercises and go from there.

These “cushions” around my belly and on my hips not only make me miserable when I’m about to get into my jeans in the morning, but make me feel somehow too heavy to exercise.

I usually gain weight in my derriere and my thighs, this belly and hip thing (and my arms as well! My 40-year old body is full of surprises) is all ne to me.

Has anybody had any experience with losing and keeping off unwanted weight with Hashi and PCOS?

Ever since my diagnosis, I changed my eating habits to avoid sugars, starches, antibiotics and hormones in meat and dairy (buying organic is not only expensive but can be a sham). I’m a flexible vegan (which means that I sometimes eat fish, very rarely organic eggs, chicken breasts and soup). I avoid dairy and do not eat any gluten or red meet. I crave salty and starchy stuff (potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, pretzels etc.) more than sweets. I try not to give in. I do not eat sugar. My only source of sugar is fruit.

I also have digestion problems and sometimes even IBS symptoms. All the good vegetables make me bloated (all types of beans, lentils, broccoli, cauliflower… even butternut squash and chestnuts!). I am considering introducing some organic (sheep or goat) yogurt to try to repopulate my gut with good bacteria. I’ve been suffering from Candida from time to time (vaginal symptoms, frequent non-bacterial UTIs, sinusitis).

My husband (who’s blessed with fast metabolism, lack of cravings and love for sports) has been a huge support. We started going for long brisk walks in the evenings (since I don’t have energy to go running, and I used to run, swim or ride a bike for over an hour most days of the week).

I feel great when I juice fast and eat raw, but it’s hard to stick to it for more than two months (I am being generous here). The moment I stopped being focused on weight-loss I start gaining weight.

Anyway, I would really appreciate your advice and support. I feel that I still have the possibility to find some balance and faith in my own body. I sometimes feel so out of control. Sometimes for no reason at all when I doing everything right my body fails me…

Sounds like you are on the right track and more or less just need the continued support of your friends and family and to stay on track. You are only slightly over weight, which is the hardest to maintain. Most of the population doesn't have an active lifestyle, so trying to lose those last few pounds are really hard unless you are dedicating an hour a day to the gym, combining weight training and cardio. If you aren't doing that, then you are looking at just a slow grind of keeping your caloric intake at a level where you are losing a little bit of weight and keeping that way for a very long time. The problem with juicing or other methods of weight loss is that they are only temporary. You need to find a routine that is permanent, which is pretty much just keeping a better eye on the amount of food you are eating every day

Thank you allcdnboy for your reply and support.
Fast is indeed only a temporary solution and does me a world of good (cleansing, more energy...). I continue to juice even when I am not fasting, vegetables mostly.
I'll try to incorporate weight training (I've never done that so far) and for the first time in my life keep a food/exercise diary.
I don't know anyone who has both conditions that I have. Some women I know have PCOS and three have Hashi's. Only two of them have no weight problems and both have EDs.

Thanx again!

My sweet friend was also blessed with PCOS and Hashimotos. She's vegan and GF because it causes flare ups in her Hashi's. She has 3 little ones and rarely has energy to do much in the way of exercise, but pushes herself to run a little bit each night because that seems to be the only thing that helps get her weight off. We all have struggles in this battle and we're all here to support and motivate. <3

Hi guys,

Hi there
living with PCOS is so hard. I didn't find out that I had it until trying for a baby. I don't have many of the typical PCOS symptoms but was a little heavier than I wanted to be. I struggled with the healthy eating and low GI diet. I would be motivated one week and then struggle the next. I was all over the shop with my eating but still doing a bit of exercise. I ended up having to use Clomid to get pregnant... and after a few months got lucky.

That was a couple of years ago and we started thinking about baby number 2 and thought this time I need to get serious about health eating and looking after myself.

I ended up working with a woman called Alison at Reach Your Peak after a friend recommended her and she helped me with a health program. I worked with her online as I lived in a different state to her and the program helped me so much. I lost about 10 kg (lightest ive been for ever) and the most amazing thing happened - I got my period back!!! For the first time in the 5 years since I came off birth control! It was almost too good to be true but it happened. It was like I finally started giving my body what it needed and things feel together. I was eating natural wholefoods and the program just made it so easy. I was able to stick to it and once I saw results - well motivation to continue just flows.

I am now super hopeful that I might be able to get pregnant again without medical intervention. If I do ill be singing this program from the rooftops!

Alison also has lived with PCOS so she totally gets the emotional rollercoaster that it is. I would highly highly recommend you get in touch with her if you are struggling with your diet and nutrition while trying to manage your PCOS. You can fin even if you just want to ask her a few questions :) her contact is reachyourpeak@outlook.com.au

Good luck with your journey
