weight-loss and skin health

Hi everyone !

I was wondering if any of you with chronic issues saw some kind of improvement after your weight loss ?

I've had a severe case of eczema ever since I was born and now at 23 it developed other problems as well that I never talk about but have to live with everyday.

I am guessing that better eating habits that would come with the weight-loss would help the skin. Can anyone confirm this ?

Thank you

heya, welcome to the forum!

i think at the end of the day nutrition and exercise play a really big role in health from the inside and out.....unfortunately i can't comment on whether it would help with the eczema since i'm not a qualified professional. however you'd feel a world of difference in terms of improved energy and fitness levels etc

however, to answer your above question i could tell you from personal experience what improvements my lifestyle change (healthy eating/exercising) has done for me so far:-
- i used to get chronic headaches i'd get them every week and they would run for 3-4days at a time, i used to live on painkillers for the headaches but those completely stopped...i've been headache free for months and thank everyday for it.

- my skin used to be quite good when i was younger but the last 10yrs or so has been really unhealthy looking but has greatly improved the last few months as well. it's not excellent but i'm definitely happier with the improvement. i'm now trying to increase the range of fruits/veges to get more vitamins/minerals in my system and also eat a alot of fiber since i feel it all plays a big factor plus i drink loads of water. i'm also now incorporating more healthy oils in my diet (from nuts, seeds, olive oil, fish oils) and hoping it also helps my skin.

ummm, those are the major ones i can think of for now, by the way i started at 350 and now down to 317 so i'm hoping the longer i stay on this journey the more improvements i'll start to see both internally and externally....i wish the same for you on your journey, all the best xoxo:grouphug:

thanks for your great post, I really appreciate.

I am quite impressed at how everyone wants to help each other here. I've never been part of something like this and the more I think about it the more I think I should be part of it :)

I never lost weight of my life, it's always been going up and this must be why I have no idea what to expect

It's kinda weird how it's so hard to motivate ourselves despite all the benefits of being fit. I guess my problem is that I have always dreamed of being thinner but never actually believed I could be

i know what you mean...when i started on the journey i just felt so alone, all my thin friends as much as they wanted to be there for me couldn't identify with the problems i go through day in day out coz of my weight. so i'm glad i found the forum at the right time because everyone on here is really supportive and friendly and most importantly is going through or has gone through the same thing...and we all have the same goal. i don't feel so alone in this anymore.

i also know what you mean when you say all your life you've been adding weight...that was the story of my life. then early january something just snapped and i was like enough is enough....so in feb started my journey.....i know i have a long way to go, but i definitely feel like i'm a million miles away from where i was in january...and have no regrets whatsoever. i kick a$$ at the gym 5 days a week and eat right 99.9% of the time and at the end of each day i feel just a little more better about myself. my self esteem was at zero before i started and now i'm slowly picking up the pieces and starting to put my life back together again...and it feels great!

i'd suggest exploring the forum particularly diaries and before/after pics...there's also clubs and challenges etc. and of course i'm sure you've been told to read the stickies to know where to begin on nutrition/exercise etc

your definitely in the right place...all the best xoxo

Like Cherry above, I can't comment on your exact problem but I can tell you what happened for me.

I decided a few years ago to stop eating junk, stop eating packaged and processed foods, and avoid fillers and chemicals and preservatives. It doesn't mean I never eat any of that stuff, but I've cut it down to less than 10% of my overall diet. I concentrate on eating lean meat, veggies and fruits, and whole grains. I try to get at least 25% of my diet from healthy fats (olive oil, peanuts, almonds, avocado, etc.)

In the last couple of years my skin and hair have gotten less oily. I don't break out as often. My rosacea on my cheeks and nose has faded somewhat. My fingernails are MUCH healthier and don't crack and split the way they used to. My hair is thicker and less likely to break and split.

Aside from those external things, I used to go to bed every night with horrible heartburn - sometimes waking up in the night with reflux that would make me cough and gag. I used to buy Rolaids by the case at Sam's Club. Now, I haven't had heartburn in over a year. I honestly can't remember the last time.

I also can tell a real difference in how I feel when I *don't* eat healthy foods now. Used to be I felt bad enough all the time that I couldn't tell when something I ate affected me. I used to wonder at the people who would say "oh I can tell I ate too much salt food ysterday" or "wow that dessert was too rich" (I mean seriously whoever heard of TOO rich, right?). Now I'm one of those people. I can wake up in the morning and tell when my sodium the day before was too high. I can tell from the way I feel that I've been slacking on my nutrition. If something is too rich or too fatty, I can taste it and feel it weighing down my stomach.

It's amazing the way your body will tell you when you're doing something wrong - if you just give it the chance.

So I'd suspect that even if your eczema doesn't completely go away, it will become much better with healthy eating.

I've lost 27 lbs in the past few weeks and I can notice similar things on my body too. I still have a long way to go with my weight loss, but I have already noticed that my hair feels a little different and my skin feels a little different as well. There's no good way to describe the changes, so I'll just say that it's all "healthier" feeling. Who knew that losing weight was GOOD for you? :willy_nilly:

Very nice. I am glad for you and I hope I will get that kind of result as well. Of course I don't really care about my hair because i'm a guy :D but I'd be extremely happy to have a good looking skin :)
