weight gainers at GNC... the pouders

Need some advice about the weight gainers at GNC.com. They have like 2000 calories per serving. Looks good for bulking. Can everyone post advice on what they know about it? I know someone already told me they were bad. But I kinda liike the concept.

I think those have a crap load of sugar in them. If you do get that, I wouldnt drink it all in one serving b/c your body cant take in that much protein at once

I thort I wrote about this yesterday, maybe it was another topic.

Dont use weight gainers, they are low in protien so you need to take twice as much, so your spending twice as much.

it cheaper and better for you to drink a protien shake and eat 2slices of bread

gainers are nothing more than protein and sugar. liquid drinks are great when one cant eat more food during the day or when solid food cant be had. homemade drinks (think smoothies) are more beneficial plus you can control taste and numbers.

I disagree. I love the N-Large 2 from Pro-Lab. Taste pretty good. Has about 600 cal, 53 g of protein. About $1.50 per serving too so not that expensive. I eat it IN ADDITION to my school lunch.

wait, disagree about what? these are the ingredients

Ingredients: Whey protein concentrate, maltodextrin, fructose, cocoa powder (dutch process), natural & artificial flavors and lecithin.

its just protein and sugar.

Wow

4 scoops/serving??? I could take 4 scoops of my ON and get 80 grams of protein, and 4 carbs, 0 sugar.

4 scoops of powder is a lot of powder to put in a drink. its must be really gooey!
I go for 1.5scoops of pure whey to give me 25g of protien in a drink. unless your 200lbs you dont really need much more than that. You'll just store it as fat.

Exactly, you're missing out on 82 grams of carbs in that mix of four scoops. N-large is a great weight gainer if that's what you're after. It's really not that gooey at all, though I make mine a little thick because i prefer it that way. I'm surprised a lot of you are ripping on weight gainers when I suspect many of you haven't tried them before. It's all up to the individual.

82grams of carbs is 2small bagles. If your your saying that its easyer to make a powder shake and wash up after than it is to eat 2 bagles then your crazy.

Wouldn't you rather eat some solid food after your workout than drink milk and powder???

these products have been around for over 20 years, they were laughed at then and still laughed at today. you're not understanding that all they're doing is loading these products up with sugar to make the numbers higher. if someone hasnt tried them before is only because they know not to waste their money. these products are still around because there are still some ppl that will buy them

abear ...some peeps just don't listen when we try to offer legit advice. They just have to live and learn by THEIR ways I guess.

yea, i know. i was exactly like that. its just that i dont want to see them waste too much time and effort like i did years ago.

Yeah man, thats true with many things inside and outside the health and fittness world.

Stupid people bring the industry down!

I'll get off my high horse to ask a legit question:
I assumed this weight gainer was a source of good carbs because it offers 86 g of carbs and only 28 are sugar. So i don't see how it is loaded up with sugar to make the numbers higher if only 33% is actually sugar.

Plus, i've always taken bagels to contain high saturated fats.

But I'm starting to agree that I'd much rather have a satifying whole food lunch. Though I'd rather have that, I know I won't be able to with school's cafeteria junk food so would a weight gainer not be a good alternative? I usually eat it with a bowl of pasta.

I just don't see why these are discounted without merit. They have a large amount of protein, non-sugar carbs, and have low fat, while being quite tasty. Please explain in more detail, i'm trying to learn.

an old marketing scheme. they're not counting the maltodextrin as sugar because it can be claimed as a complex carbohydrate. but it digests just as fast as glucose (dextrose) so it doesnt matter that they claim it complex when the body doesnt respond to it in that way. its also a very cheap ingredient and void of any nutrients.

thats why these products are not looked upon with much respect

But doesn't the body need lots of glucose to function? Why is the fact that it digests quickly a negative? What complex carbs are actually good for you? I'm thinking wheats and whole grains, but what types specifically (like glucose, maltose, etc).
