Where do you get the "30 min of exercise = 300 calories expended" information?

Not for everyone! (Sorry, red rag to a bull!)...

I hate hate HATE water aerobics as its way too slow and I dislike being splashed. I also wear glasses so cannot see when I go into the pool I dislike this too.

I hate swimming as I cannot see anything clearly and have no music to swim to. I find it dull and boring.

I walk fine though, just prefer running on an incline better for exercise.

And 300kcals per hour, sorry but I think its more likely to be 300kcals per hour- if you really challenge yourself.

Hey guys,

I don't think its possible to genrealise about exercise people wont hate. i have clients who hate walking but love running! One of my clients hates most cardio training we do, but for some reasons loves circuits. Exericse like and dislikes are completely personal! In my job, I MAKE people do exericse whether they like it or not, but thats my job!

To be really honest the best exercise for weight loss is anything that increases your heart rate and that you enjoy! Its also important that it fits into your lifestyle becuse you need to be doing it regularly!

HTH

Also sorry, but the exercise would need to be very intense to burn 300kcals in half an hour and the three listed in the first post are not going to burn calories at the rate indicated!

I agree with everything you say.

However, I'd argue that many folks should concern themselves with fat loss opposed to weight loss. And overall health, of course.

Both of these things require a more balanced approach. In this case, heart rate isn't the be all end all, as I'm sure you know since you're in the biz. Things like strength training bring a lot of good things to the table but many people ignore it since it's not something that directly impacts the scale.

Everyone is racing to make the number on the scale fall without paying attention to what's optimal for improving physique and health.

Again, just expanding on what you said. I agreed with everything.

Steve: I really couldnt agree more with your expansion of what I said. In my post I did focus mainly on "cardio" because that is what was being discussed in the first post! But in terms of fat loss the best method is a combination of cardio and resistance training. There is a misconcemption that to lose fat, cardio is the only exercise type useful. In fact my toning and working muscles, you build muscle which in turn burns more calories at rest! I must add that WOMEN WILL NOT BUILD BODYBUILDER MUSCLE BY DOING RESISTANCE TRAINING!

I love to swim and really want to try water aerobics at some point when I have the money!! I am going to start trying to walk for half an hour a day despite the British weather!! Rainy today :(

Good, and thanks for the clarification.

I wish that some of the professionals I read wouldn't lie about how many more calories each additional pound of muscle weighs though. That's a personal pet peeve of mine.
