I have been weighing food rather than using a measuring cup. I am starting to think that maybe measuring in a cup is a better way to measure, than by weighing per ounce. It seems that with weighing I get more food.
It depends on what type of food you are weighing. For solid food like chicken, fish etc it is better to use a scale. For foods like rice; oatmeal etc it is easier and convenient to use a cup. This is how I weigh my food. Also another point to note when you weigh chicken/fish/meats ensure that you weigh it after it is cooked and not raw this helps you get accurate wt of the food as they lose water while they are being cooked.
As for factoring in water; I always weigh my food after it has been cooked especially chicken; fish etc. It is easier that way to ensure that the water content is not a factor because water is lost when the food is cooked.
As for the caloric value; I ensure I read the labels on the packages and figure out the rest based on portions.
you guys count calories and weigh your food too? geeze... i would find that far too irritating. hehe The only scales we have in our house are bathroom scales... got to love students.
I do a combination of both measuring foods that are easy to measure in a cup and foods that are not so easily measured in a cup. I don't count calories I count weight watchers points. As a rule I weigh the food after it is cooked. I figure there iwhy count the points if they have evapourated during cooking. I think you are doing it right.
