weak back

Whenever i do push ups or sit ups after about 20 my back starts to hurt and they become much more difficult to do consequently. What id like to know is, is there any way of strengthening your back or should i just try to avoid doing these exercises?

Core strength (not just your abs) is what protects your spine (particularly the stabilizers, like the multifidi, erector spinae, transverse abs and obliques). These muscles do not work independently of each other. They all work together to keep your core strong and to support your spine properly.

Since you use your core to keep your body straight while doing push ups, it sounds like you need to build up your core strength.

More info would be nice. Age, weight, height, goals, how long have you been working out, etc.

And do you have a back injury now or have you previously injured your back?

How long have you been working out? Are you under 30 or over 30? And do you have a back injury?

There are dozens of core exercises that will strengthen your core. But some are a little easier, some are intermediate and some are very difficult.

OK.

You can probably do all of the following ab exercises. Just be very careful of your back. If it hurts, don't do it. If your back continues to bother you, go see a physiotherapist or a doctor.

You always want to maintain as neutral a spine position as possible when doing ab exercises. That means try not to round out your back or push out your stomach. Hold your stomach as flat as you can.

This site gives you a visual for some ab exercises. I would stay away from Oblique Crunches and Side Plank Dips right now. Supermans might bother your back, too. Work up to those.

I think planks are awesome exercises for your core. Only hold the position for as long as you can with good form:

(if you can do the final progression of the side plank, you're rocking!)

If you have any questions, please ask :)

Great Links right there.

Im a relative beginner and was wondering when I should do these exercies.
Should it be after a weights session or on a seperate day?

I do those exercises at the end of my workout. Right now, I'm lucky to get in 4 workouts a week.

So it's pretty much every other day. I don't see why you can't do the exercises I've given you every day. Don't overdo it, though, and always try to maintain really good form.
