Hi :waving:

I'm desperately trying to slim down for my holiday in 5 weeks (although I've been trying to lose weight for the last 2 years, with limited success). Thought I'd join up on here for some help/inspiration/tips etc, as I feel I'm getting no-where. Hopefully I can find out where I'm going wrong and how to rectify it!

Hi, and thanks :)

I think I'm mainly failing on the food part. I like food too damn much - especially tasty junky food! Cutting that out is just hard. I think now I'm eating too few calories, but too many g's of fat... That and maybe I'm not doing the right exercise. Or a combination of the two. Or not enough of either/both.

I've started a diary in an attempt to see if I or anyone else can pinpoint where I'm going wrong. Plus the thought of being told off by the masses for doing the wrong thing/eating the wrong thing may spur me into more action!

K. So the solution to your problem is "Priority". Until you make weight loss THE priority in your life, you will likely struggle to succeed.

Once your fitness goal becomes the leading priority in your life (equal to work, family, God and country), everything else is easy. You make time to exercise. You turn down opportunities to eat inappropriately, shunning them like the plague. You will weigh yourself religiously, not taking each pound that falls off as an excuse to "go splurge" but just as a semi-important milestone for your ultimate fitness goal.

And....I don't think g of fat has shit-all to do with it. Calories are calories in my book. Eat few enough of them and you'll drop weight. I can gain weight eating nothing but vegetables too. You just have to eat a lot of them. My point is...rambling here...if this is a priority for you, it'll be important enough to you to log your calories and you'll soon see the choices you need to embrace.

Good luck!

Hi Phil, and thanks for your post!

Weight loss is definately my priority. Maybe sometimes a little too much, as I sometimes feel I'm obsessing over it... I do have little treats occasionally, but I will turn down a muffin, or an ice-cream milkshake, or a packet of crisps. I know that I'll regret eating it more than not eating it. I do also weight myself regularly (usually every morning), although I've been told this is bad. But seeing even a small loss gives me a huge boost for the day. That alone is worth the shunning of that muffin. I'd rather shun muffin than shun the loss of muffin-top!!

I've read so many stories about how calorie counting is the way to go. Then others that say that low/no-fat is the way to go. Then others that say low/no carbs is the way to go. I'm lost in amongst it all. I don't know what really is best for me or my body. So I guess I just try and cut down on everything. Hopefully the extra exercise I've started doing will start working it's magic - it is only my 2nd week doing 2x zumba classes a week, and I've only been doing the bike riding for about a month now (although I can only do that at weekends). I just hope it's enough to make a difference.

Sounds like you're on the right trail. The only potential pitfall is that heavy exercise definitely increases appetite. Without monitoring calories you're going to naturally want to eat more. So...just soldier through the hunger. A lighter you awaits.

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with Phil that your primary focus should be total calories before worrying about grams of fat etc. People write about going low fat - but our bodies actually need a certain amount of healthy fat to work right... Similarly we need carbs too as we can run into problems if we do not get enough fibre... Lots of people think only of things like bread and potatoes as carbs - but these are really the starchy carbs... If you look closely at your nutrition you will discover that all your fruit and vegetables are actually carbs...

We do benefit from having a healthy diet - much as everyone else benefits from having a healthy diet... We need things like protein, fibre, calcium etc. Just as when spending money on a limited budget - when we are limiting calories in order to loose weight - we are wise if we spend our calories wisely on the things to keep us healthy.

A little obsession is no bad thing. I swear that an obsessive personality helped me to literally half my weight... It helps to keep us on track...

Extra exercise always helps... I love zumba - and plan on doing two zumba classes today. :) They really are a fun way of getting some great exercise done... I tend to do zumba on five days a week. :)

Dont worry too much if you are not where you would like to be in time for your holiday... These things take time - but if you keep on trying you will get there in the end.
