want to lose fat/weight, but can't run

You're not using sarcasm too well.

The topic creator did not specify that he/she was morbidly obese, only that a back problem stopped her from running.

nice idea but obvioulsy hes morbidly obese and cant so mamby u should just kill ure self :)

People don't come here to be insulted by you. Show some respect or get the hell outa here.

Brisk walking works best for me. I got in shape the quickest by doing early morning walks which began 20 mins each morning and I worked my way up to 2 hours of walking up and down grades at my nearby college. (I haven't been able to do it lately because of my schedule but I totally miss it and plan to get back on it a.s.a.p.)

I was deconditioned when I began, had a neck and knee problem but in little time my energy level began to rise and my knee and neck strengthened. Part of my plan included drinking plenty of H20, eating 5 small meals of green, grain, protein and fruit and getting rest.

I wish you all the best as you build your healthy lifestyle! Please keep posting.

footnote: I have a feeling that if Jose continues to post in this manner he may well be quickly banned from this site. And if that's the case, I'm certain it's something we'll all learn to live with. LOL!!

Jose, how's this for funny... I am about to ban you! This is a forum where we all respect each other, even if we don't agree. Flat out rudeness is called "trolling", and as a moderator I won't tolerate it. This is your first and last warning.

The quicker you kick Jose off the better.

Static bike riding is probably going to work.
You obviously need some professional advice and most good fitness centres will be able to help.

Exercies bike sounds good. I think the best way to heal a bad back is too actually exercise it, unlike popular belief. Gentley ofcourse, and building up.

its a good thing people don't suggest that option for stupidity, or you wouldn't be here posting..

on another note.. try swimming? i have heard a lot of people with back problems.. doing that.. and it works wonders..
or ofcourse the stationary bike is an option.. or you could even try YOGA... (i am from india) and it has proved successful for weight loss.. and it will help your back ache in the long run... gluck :)

If you've got a back problem I hope you're getting it sorted out. You didn't specify what it was, but most mechanical pain can be "cured" quite easily with the right hands.

Fathom is right, exercise is crucial for returning to normal function - so it's good that you're doing it. X-trainer and exercise bike are good alternatives to the high-impact of running; rowing's good too - but stop if you get any sharp pains (aching is ok, it's to be expected).

Make sure you work your "core muscles" (see other threads), & try HIIT for an easy way to boost your metabolism.

Have fun........

no, you must run

 @ eliktronix, dont post bs please!

i agree with what most of the people here said,

swimming / stationary bike are great alternatives to running :D

good luck with your fitness goals!

you can also lose weight by dieting alone, but with exercise it makes perfect. swimming is good because it does not put pressure on you the same way exercising in gravity does

I can relate to your problem as i also suffer with my back, and i cannot run either. I find the X-Trainer works well with interval training to burn calories/fat. How much do you want to lose and what's wrong with your back? I also do regular yoga classes which helps to strengthen core muscles. It works really well. After a class my back feels more relaxed. Yoga really does help to relieve stress and tension from the body. Good luck! :)

There is so much you can do, but without more history on you personally we couldn't really help with specifics.

What is your exercise history, when did what happen to your back, what has your doctor told you specifically about what you should or should not do.

Some people with bad backs are fine on an exercise bike, but some people also get worse. So use caution and start slow.

Also, are you looking for something to do at home or in a gym?

Post back some more info, and don't worry, there is much more in the fabulous world of cardio and fat burning than running!:)

Do you have access to a gym? The elliptical may work for you as there is none of the impacting you get from running. If not, then a bike would probably work (unless your back problems are cervical or thoracic where the posture on a bike may not work).

pool gym is good too, not just swimming. My girl had surgery on her spine and that was the exercise docs told her to do

bye
