Walking vs nothing

Hi there, I'm just wondering how much benefit does walking have over nothing, obvious it does help but I'm wondering how much. I have been doing cardio the last month and lost 28 pounds. I have about 100 to go tho. Anyways I have been walking my dog prolly between 2 and 4 miles a day and a decent pace and was just wondering what I'm getting out of it

Cardio is always 100% better than doing nothing at all. Supposedly its best if you do cardio between 35 -45 minutes.. at least thats what I've read. I can't really give you any real numbers on anything or give you the right answer you're looking for but keep it up. 28lbs is great! Congrats!

A lot.. really a lot. I find walking helps me immensely.
Since you're like me, and have about 100 lbs or so to go, you're carrying a lot of weight around.
Think about THAT.... it's like you're walking with 100lbs of weight.
Now tell me it won't do any good!
That's why you see a lot of big people with really big calves.

It hugely beneficial!!!

You are doing weight bearing exercise so you are increasing your bone density, you are increasing your oxygen consumption, burning calories, maintaining or increasing your muscle mass, most of all YOU ARE CREATING AN EXERCISE HABIT! That will go along way - you need to keep moving, this needs to become a part of your life. Don't discount the benefits of something that seems so simple!

Thanks for all the great replys. I knew it was better. I'm not sure where I was going with that I guess. I have been doing heavy cardio the last month (bike, jogging, and walking) with walking going about an hour and a half to two and a half hours. I'm very lucky to have a towpath right by my house so I have been taking advantage of it. I usually jog a mile, ride the stationary for 45 minutes and walk. Needles to say I'm usually busy for 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours a day.

How is he increasing muscle mass by walking ???

The gains aren't huge, but if you are caring extra weight you will build muscle mass in your calfs, shins, quads, hams and glutes by walking (most notable in sedentary people once a walking program is established). If you are already very active, then you won't see any gains as you have already out trained for that method.

Walking is very underrated in my opinion, especially at the start of someone's plan to start burning fat. spam the fat.com has a tool which takes your age, weight, height etc and tells you what your Basal Metabolic Rate* is (BMR - the amount of calories your body comsumes by doing nothing all day. If you eat less than this you will lose weight and vice versa).

There is also a tool that gives you a large variety of exercises. It will take your details into account and will say how many calories a certain exercise will use up for accumulative periods of time. Everything from walking, to doing the dishes is there. Check the walking app and it will surprise you how much calories are consumed.

Other benefits (apart from all your leg muscles) from walking are that if you are bracing your torso, your abs will be worked on.

If you work, get off a bus-train stop early and walk the rest of the way to work/home. You will notice the benefits.

Too bad that website is one of those gimmicks to get money... There are plenty calorie trackers and calorie burning calculators on the internet that are free.

Well I was able to use that service for free. I suppose you are able to get free ones on phone apps etc, which is more handy when you are out and about.
