Walking to weight loss :)

Hi there :seeya:

Im 29
5' 4" tall
150 pounds...my goal weight is 126 pounds...maybe more if I get there

I started my weight loss journey this morning by walking 4 miles to work.

I aim to do this 5 days a week and will mix in some yoga (i currently practice) and some weight/resistance work.

I'd like to lose up to 2 pounds a week If I can.

I eat very sensibly so thats not a great concern for me, but I'm not as active as I once was having an office job and long hours.

I also rely on public transport which takes big chunks of time away!

Anyway, I may add some photos if I get the nerve, I'm hoping this forum will keep me motivated :D

Thanks

Walking what a great idea! sigh =.= it takes me too long to walk to work so I can't do it everyday unfortunately.
Altho I wouldn't use walking as my only cardio work to lose weight because...

walking 4 miles only burns 200 kcal at 4 mph... which is very fast pace walking too. and that's a whole hour spent walking! ...

but coupled with other exercise, it sure can be an extra bonus, plus saves you money and for some it takes less time than commuting! .. for some.
T.T not for me.. I've run it once tho, 10km in the morning, 1h...

I'm not sure how many cals burnt with yoga tho or resistance work... not sure how much of those you plan to do.

=D hehe good luck tho! and don't take this as a critique at all! I'm just ranting about the fact that I wish it burned more energy =P since I walk a lot myself.

xx

good luck on your journey! 2 pounds a week is sensible and definately acheivable. Im also 5"4 trying to get down to the 120's.

Hi there!

The walking was an easy choice as I can fit it in my routine, although I need to be up at 5am for it
I can either wait for the bus and sit through a 20 min bus ride, or walk it instead! :hurray:

I’m also wanting to do a couple of sessions a week of exercises using dumbbells, I have a set with light/medium and heavy weights in it to build up.

Yoga is now part of my exercise routine anyway as I was using it for my stress so that’s an added bonus.

I was thinking of doing the 40 min walk every weekday morning.
Evenings alternating between yoga and weight/resistance work….the yoga contains resistance work but its very gentle and builds on my flexibility.

I would like to do something more high impact such as aerobics, but last time I did it I injured my foot during the class. I realised the instructor wasn’t suitable after that and haven’t gone back.

I have been looking at the ministry of sound workout dvd’s, they look like fun but I’m not sure if they are suitable for beginners????

I have a fairly healthy diet

I eat a bowl of wheat flakes with strawberries in a morning with a cup of tea and a yoghurt

Wholegrain bar for mid morning

Sandwich (on wholegrain bread) or jacket potato and a filling (tuna or baked beans mostly) and 2 pieces of fruit at lunch.

Main meal at night

It doesn’t sound much, but I do have fairly generous portions, I love food so don’t tend to let myself get too hungry.

I tend to drink about 4 mugs of decaff tea at work and plenty of water.

Thanks for replying :)

Well...I got myself walking again this morning :)

I also ran for 10 seconds then walked for 2 mins, alternating for around 10 minutes halfway through the walk to get my blood pumping.

I also did some exercises with light weights 0.5kg last night along with some push ups and sit ups.

I plan to do an hours yoga tonight as well :)

I'm tempted to step on the scales already, but only a couple of days in to me is unrealistic, so I'll check next Tuesday and do the weekly weigh in!

I'm also drinking LOADS more water as I've heard that your body stores more and bloats the less you drink??

bye for now! :p

^.^ Hehe been doing some thinking based on what I've read about on this huge forum. (ok am at work and I get distracted lol)

You eat about 1500 kcal a day I assume from your diet and "big portions"? Make sure to properly count calories. If you know, can you tell me? With walking and some yoga and general daily life, I'd average your daily burn to around 1900 ish? if you do yoga that day. 1750 when you don't.

Please let me know how your diet goes and if you can, how fast you lose weight? =D might help me calibrate my own dietary needs.

and good job on alternating run/walk !

And I agree, I weight myself every week, at the same time. Some do it everyday and then average it out but that depends if you panic when you see a higher value or not!

Hia :)

I'm not actually trying to diet, this is what I normally eat anyway, but It looks like I'm under the amount i should be eating! Maybe I need to up this slightly with the exercise I'm doing?

Heres yesterdays calories:

Breakfast - bowl of wheat flakes cereal = 166kcals

Morning snack - reduced fat biscuit and raisin bar = 90 kcals

Lunch = cheese sandwich = 291 kcals

Afternoon snack = reduced fat chewee toffee bar = 90 kcals

Shepherds pie and LOADS of veggies for tea = 450kcals-500kcals

Yoghurt for pudding = 90kcals

2 x decaff instant cofee and milk = 10.8 cals (may be more?)

LOADS OF WATER

TOTAL = 1193 kcals for the day, may be slightly higher but not a great deal.

I really need to up my fruit and veg though!!

By Not a diet, you mean: not eating anything special when I mean: eating less to lose weight. ^-^; different definition I guess...
O.O you should probably be losing weight tho, esp if you exercise even a little bit since you're well under your daily calories. I don't think you're aiming too low, unless you start some hardcore cardio!
1200 kcal is me eating when I'm on a diet and DONT exercise =), 1500 when I do (I run, do stepping and the heliptical for 1h total)

So keep it up! =)

Thanks for the advice :)

I did forget to add 2 glasses of fresh orange juice, so that takes me a little higher :)

I plan to make tonight my first yoga night, I did weights last night so I'm going to alternate. It just means on the days I do the weights I can allow myself a few more calories.

I just bought a Ministry of Sound workout dvd for £5, so going to give that a go for the weekends as one big cardio session....looks fun too :)

Heres yesterdays calories:

Breakfast - bowl of wheat flakes cereal = 166kcals

Morning snack - reduced fat biscuit and raisin bar = 90 kcals

Lunch = cheese sandwich = 291 kcals

Evening meal: Butternut squash and chestnut soup = around 100-150 kcals

1 small bread roll = 140 kcals

Yoghurt for pudding = 90kcals

2 x decaff instant cofee and milk = 10.8 cals (may be more?)

LOADS OF WATER

2 x small glasses of orange juice = roughly 100 kcals

plus *hangs head in shame* a slice of choccy birthday cake = around 235 kcals (it was very small)

TOTAL = 1272.8 kcals for the day, may be slightly higher but not a great deal.

I did 40-45 of fast walking, and around 20 mins with weights again and some push ups, sits ups and squats as I ran out of time for yoga.

I've already done my 40-45 mins walk again this morning, and im going on a 30 mins walk at lunch.

NOT doing weights tonight as I need to rest my muscles :)

:seeya:
1 week in...4 pounds lost...WOHOOO!!

I aimed at 2-3 pounds, not sure I really wanted to lose 4 in the first week as I want a steady weight loss, but I'm not complaining. :Angel_anim:

Well last weeks weight-loss certainly gave me motivation this week, but I must admit I've had to force myself to do the morning 40 mins walk the last 2 days.
When I'm walking I feel great and I always stretch it out when I get to the bus station, although I get some funny looks from other commuters.
I've realised the weights I've been using are waay to light for me (0.5kg) so I'm on 1.5 to start with and will up it eventually.

I'm still starting off light, also not cutting out too many calories than normal as I don't want my body to get used to the deficiency too early.

Once my weight loss starts to slow down, I'm looking into cutting cals and upping my cardio and resistance work slightly.

Ah well, only in the second week so I don't plan on altering anything as yet. The temptation to get on the scales is still there, but I'm trying to stick to the weekly weigh in to keep motivated.

The 40 min walk is already getting easier and I feel more awake.

I'm also drinking over 2 litres of water a day (purely water) then theres milk and fresh fruit juice in between to stay hydrated.:drool5:

I've also cut out caffiene (I have the odd one as a treat) and alcohol from my diet. I did this before starting my new excercise plan to help reduce my bruxism (teeth grinding)

As it happens this is easing anyway due to the exercise, so thats fab, and hopefully my cellulite will benefit from this too :)

Watch this space :seeya:

O_O whoa they're a name to teeth grinding? -> does it during her sleep. hehe =p good I decided to check back on you. learnt something new!
4 lbs lost in 1 week? great on you =) .. keep it up this week too !

Im walking 40 mins every morning

30 mins at lunch

30 mins of weight or resistance work in evening.

I'm 5' 4"

29 years old

female

What should a healthy calorie intake be?

Its currently around the 12000 mark which I'm thinking is too low?
