A friend of mine brought me this article from the women's fittness magazine about vitamins and supplements.
I for one am horrible about taking them but know per doctor's orders and common sense that I should.
Reading this article just gave me so much information that I didn't know, I think everyone should know this:
The full article can be read for free at www.fitnessmagazine.com - search for vitamins and then select the article about Truth About Nutrition Supplements.
Vitamins and supplements are not regulated by the FDA. They can go on the shelf at GNC or walmart or any other store without being regulated or checked by anyone to ensure that what they say is in them, really is. In 2004, more than 24,000 toxic exposures to supplements were reported. Some contained lead, mercury, pesticides, mold and bacteria. Look at your bottles and see if any of them say, aristolochic acid, bitter orange, chaparral, comfrey, germander, kava, lobelia, scullcap - avoid these ingredients, or statements like 'proprietary formula, or uniquely formated blend - those are wiggle words for 'anything goes'
You can protect yourself by looking at your supplement/vitamin bottle and see if there is a seal of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) this is an organization that charges manufactures a fee t conduct an independent product test. It ensures that what the company says is in the supplement/vitamin really is in there.
If you have to take a ton of vitamins or supplements (especially per doctor's orders) it might be worth your time and money to have a lab look at them to make sure that you are putting non-toxic stuff in your body: naturaldatabase.com charges $92 a year to test for you and consumerlab.com charges $27 a year. Also a free site quackwatch.org may have some information for you.
This article also posts some top named vitamins/supplements that either passed or failed the test, examples:
nature made essential women or nature made multi for her - PASSED.
One A Day Women's - PASSED
Avon VitAdvance Women's Complete II - FAILED
Nature's Best vitamine E - FAILED
Okay, anyway - I know we are all trying to be healthy and take the right stuff for our body. I am so glad my friend passed this article along to me.
