'Virtual Strength'?

I read in one of Pavel Tsatsoulines books that it is possible to increase strength by performing a move with imaginary weights by tensing the relevant muscles as they would be in the exercise.

It makes sense that this would improve a neuromuscular connection but can it really have much of an effect?

I dont think it has much of an effect, but can help better you in your form. If you were to do the movement in proper form wihtout anyhting, and see your muscle moving to it, I really think that its good. Your brain also makes a connection to this movement and when your doing the lift, it will help you.

I didn't read the book, but I'm guessing what he's trying to do is instruct people on how to actually think about contracting the muscles of the exercises they're performing.

Because how many people actually think about the muscles they're using, contract them and do the exercise the right way? I'm willing to bet that they just go through the movements because that's how the exercise is done, so then they really don't 'have' to try and let the exercise do the 'work'...

the technique helps, you think beyond lifting the weight, you think more of exerting your muscles and contraction.

Power To The People is an awesome, you read any other Tsatsouline?

Also, Dragondoor.com has a forum filled with goons who read his books and follow his techniques to the T. You may be able to get a better answer on that forum.

Nice one mike, yeh I have just downloaded most of his books but my computer is low on ink so i havent read them all yet.
