UFC Training

I have heard that most of them use a mix of running/sprints, calisthenics and weight training.A lot of their conditioning comes from their actual skills work and sparring.

Yup, Ballast is right. The guys spend an incredible amount of time training specifically for their sport that weight lifting is second. A friend of mine trains with teh Lion's Den crew in Dallas and the guys typically lift about twice a week concentrating one day on explosive work (oly lifts, depth jumps, speed lifts) and one day of strength training.

There are times they will go more frequently but a lot is determined by how far out their fights are. They'll also typically periodize their training between absolute strength and funcitonal hypertrophy (depending on weight class allowance and time to next fight).

Well, it varies greatly from fighter to fighter but I know that a lot of them follow traditional bodybuilding routines and then spar all afternoon. Which in MMA involves wrestling which builds a lot of strength.

Many others do stricly sparring and bag work

Others like bas rutten are major circut trainers with a havy emphasis on shadow boxing and wrestling

anyone in particular that you are wondering about??

Nah, just in general, like Vitor Belfort and Van Arsdale. I was just thinking about the difference between these guys and body builders. Body builders appear to have more muscle, but the UFC guys would probably kill any of them in a fight.

Well, I do not know about van asrsdale but belfort does a lot of mit work, pad work and plyometrics. Plyos are pretty common and make a big difference in the explosive power against the bodybuilders

They do jumping lunges and jumping squats to help with shoots. Belfort does jump pushups and while he is in the air he hits a punching mit as many times as he can before he hits the floor. I am sure they do lots of generic sport plyos also
