Twobottles......... to one bottle?

Hi there,

First of all, a six pack would be nice but for me, unlikely.

Ive been overweight for most of my life since I was 13 or so. Around the age of 21 whilst travelling I became what you might call "trim" but by 23 I was going back to my usual shape. I have never managed to stick to any diet as I seem to love food so much. Im afraid that I comfort ate foods like sweets and potato chips and love fish n chips from the fish n chip shop.

For a few years my weight hovered around 99 kilos. I just had a few weeks off study and worked hard in the garden, went to the shops less, ate more healthily and without realising dropped the coke and sweets. I also had a habit of a couple of drinks per night on average.

Well, a few kilos just dropped off, without considering the alcohol. I used our crosstrainer that had been gathering dust in the garage and semi enjoyed it.

I wondered what I could accomplish if I:

1 Stop drinking fizzy sugary drinks

2 Think about what it is I put in my body

3 Exercise

So about 10 weeks later ive lost 10 kilos.

Im eating a small bowl of muesli and an apple for breakfast. A carrot, some lettuce, spinach, red pepper and red onion for lunch.... sometimes with a piece of fish. The same again for evening meal.

Its working, I enjoy the taste of the food but im thinking I should probably vary the diet a bit. I am a bit of a fussy eater and don't eat meat, fish only. So fish meat! Just to clear up any veggie/meat antagonists. I kill fish.

I try to use the crosstrainer for 30 mins a day.

I know nothing about diet or nutrition currently. I have a little salt, olive oil and just a little butter when I fry the fish.

I feel good about these foods and will also begin to substitute fish for eggs every now and then, omelette no oil.

Having been overweight for most of my life, 41yrs, avoiding thinking about what I put in my body and not exercising enough I have decided it is time for a change. I want to feel good about my body, get into shape and if I can accomplish that, begin to add some muscle.

Ive spent around 10 years at 98 kilos or so. I wonder what my ideal weight would be for my height and muscle size, Im 5'10".

Mum always said I had heavy bones.

Recently I made a change in my diet and more or less overnight stopped eating sugar, I was happy to eat it because I felt my body wanted it. Feeling tired? Have a can of coke. In the evening, hmmm im hungry..... ooh yes a few pieces of chocolate. I love to make cakes, brownies choc chip cookies you name it.

So I am eating a small bowl of dry fruity muesli with a chopped apple for breakfast.
A carrot and lettuce/spinach with red onion, red pepper and sometimes a piece of fish, lightly fried in a very little olive oil and butter.
Same, salad and fish for dinner. Sometimes two eggs, no oil instead of fish. A few hazelnuts if I really have to snack.

Im thinking about trying to not eat processed foods, also as a student, the diet I choose should be inexpensive, the fish is a little expensive. Don't want to eat other animals.

I would be keen to hear from anyone who has opinions on the diet, it does not seem very varied.
Also any 40yr old males who successfully lost their tummy fat and kept it off!

My motivation is currently high, I hope to fill this diary with positive energy and results

Regards

Welcome twobottles! Those sound like some good goals. I too eat very little animal products. Good luck on your weight loss journey.

Welcome two bottles...the changes you have made to your diet are very positive ones and as long as you incorporate exercise...weight loss should follow. Eggs can be a good add on, but I would keep a limit of 2 a day. Vary on type of fish if that's all you eat for meat, and try different recipes....I sometimes take a oven recipient and put salad with tomatoes on the bottom, fish fillet on top of salad (I marinate my fish on lime, paprika, and limited amount of salt and extra virgin olive oil)...add 2-3 thin slices of potato on top and broil in the oven for 15-20 minutes........it's DELICIOUS!! Potatoes are not super healthy, but if that's an item you crave it then it can be added in smaller amounts to you diet and in way healthier ways than fried. ;-)

Drink lots of water, add fruits......no mysteries - eating healthy may be hard at first, but you will see a body and mental health improvement just within a few days of changing your diet/exercise habits. Good Luck!!

Nice one caligirl.

Its great im seeing results. My body looks so different! Especially in clothes!

I would like to focus on getting fit and thin, we all want our belly gone! I have a tremendous opportunity to exercise daily when I take a summer job paddling in kayaks for most of the day.

I still have a big belly but there is much less fat on it now!

There has always been much discussion on sit ups, crunches and all that. I know nothing. Anyone got any tips on this? How do you take a big hanging out belly muscle and make it smaller, harder and less pokey outie!!!!??

100 crunches a day?

Im also worried that as well as losing weight I may be losing muscle. Is there a minimum amount of exercise you must do whilst eating less than your body needs to avoid losing muscle as well as fat? A I wrong and will only be losing fat? or will I definitely be losing both.

Cheers for any enlightenment, and tell me your favourite stomch muscle exercises please!

Setting myself a target to bring my weight down to 78 kgs. I'm 5ft 10in.

Currently 83 kgs!

It is the Transverse Abdominus which hold the stomach flat, and this muscle is not worked by doing crunches. good exercises for this muscle include doing the Stomach Vacuum and Planks.

Crunches work the Rectus Abdominis.

You are doing SO WELL...keep going!

Belly fat can be hard, personally my struggle area are thighs and booty, and even though I can get a bit bloated in the belly, I also lose someone fast too.

My suggestion is......EAT HEALTHY (you already seem to be doing that, but search for foods that will help you decrease water retention <asparagus, greens, red fruits, etc>

Intensive Cardio - you may technically loose the same calories whether you walk or run, but when you run (or perform any HIIT) your body is known to continue burning fat even after work out.

Particular abs exercise - I love pilates moves, it's THE ONLY workout I actually feel it the day after...planks/100's/pulsing.......just look it up 30minutes pilates work-out on youtube and you will see beginners level that LOOK easy, once you start doing it...you will know what I am talking about! haha ;-) good luck dear!

Hi 2 bottles. Re: the fish recipe from CaliGirl- sweet potatoes are a better alternative to white potatoes. My belly bloat disappeared when I stopped eating gluten. It may be worth just a week of no bread to see if that makes a difference. Years ago I lost a lot of weight in 6 months(36kg) & also lost a lot of muscle. I am not sure I would be the weight I am now if I hadn't done that, but I don't think rapid weight-loss is the way to go for long-term health. I was able to change my lifestyle, & not regain that weight, but I don't know of many others who have. Slow & steady I think is the way to go. If you are able to get some personalised training for an exercise plan that would be a good idea. I would love that. I wouldn't worry too much re muscle loss if you are also exercising regularly. I'm no expert though! All the best, Cate.

Eat food u enjoy and love the flavour but make it healthy. Mother nature has a lot if natural things that has soo much flavoyr and natural. Try go without gluten based foods and see how u feel. U might be wheat sensitive or gluten intolerant

Feeling pretty good. 80.3 Kilos. I am still a little worried that I may be losing muscle as I lose weight. My body does look much better but there is still quite a lot of fat and loose skin, oh well I will have to find a way to fill it with muscle! Starting this week will be kayaking for a job soon, so gentle abdominal exercise all day long, and arms and shoulders.........

Started eating a variety of foods again, same kind of stuff Ive been eating for years perhaps just less of it and maybe cooked in a slightly more health conscious way. I was going to set my target weight at 80 kgs but I think theres easily a few more that could come off!

Hey twobottles how are you? I agree cutting back on sugar can be one of the smartest thing we can do towards a healthy way of creating change in our diets.

Well, Finished work and back to study.

Spare time.... ahhhhhhhhhh!

Firstly, mission 1 accomplished. I got down to 75 kilos and lost inches and inches!

Im at 78 kilos at the moment and have begun to incorporate some extra excercises into my life.

Pull ups! Blown away by the fact I could do one, I am up to 6 pullups. Press ups sets of 15, not too hard. 20kgs on a curling bar.

I have lost lots of fat, but not enough to be happy with.

Will start HIT training this week!

Also, I have become much more aware and interested in the ingredients of the food I eat. I try to avoid processed food entirely. I make herbal teas and put them in the soda stream, lemon and lime and peach tea....

Lots of green veg, salad fish eggs and more recently putting cheese back into the diet. Still avoiding eating bread with meals. Using coconut oil and drinking lots of coconut water yummy yummy.
