First one is 6 Healthy foods that aren't:

Second is the 20 worst foods in America:

Not too many surprises in what they had to say, but the numbers are a bit surprising. The 2900 calorie appetizer with 182 g of fat. Now I knew it was bad, but not that bad.

You know, I knew about a lot of these but it is still horrifying to see it in print...unbelieveable that I used to eat this stuff all the time.

Thanks for the reminder.

the book that they reference is kind of interesting - i perused it last time i was in the book store - Eat this not that... I'm not sure hte book is worth the money...

The chipotle one kills me - now I like Chipotle - but their marketing is absolutely brilliant... They're all about fresh... and hormone free... if you go to the chipotlefan.com you can build yourself a healthy burrito (minus the burrito) but you expect a company that market's itself as fresh -to be "healthy" and healthy I'd make the stretch - reasonable calories -but that's really not so... I wouldn't expect cheese and ranch dressing covered french fries to be remotely healthy -but other things..

You just have to pay attention..

holy crap. My wife and I used to down that appetizer from Outback between the 2 of us.

I feel faint.

I havent eaten most of those in a while but I still feel my heart stoping. This might explain a littel of the problem I have now.

I feel faint.

So did my husband and I. After that we would have a normal dinner.

No wonder I was gigantic.

Seriously, who would have guess those things were 2900 cals? If you had me guess I would have never guess that high.

The next time my husband got them I could barely eat three fries. Blech.

:cuss:I did not see the Chipotle one I used to eat that very burrito and then at night eat a burrito bowl with that burrito. I can not belive I did not fall over with a heart attack.:ack2:

Sure makes me think that restaurants should be forced to declare the amount of calories and fat beside every menu item...:svengo:

cheers

Thank you for this post! It's crazy what I used to put into my body and how I was totaly not thinking about it! If you dig a little deeper on that site you can find a list of fast foods, and sit down, sugestions and also big no no's.. I made a quick list in my tiny weightloss log book, for refrence if the time comes.

Thanks again, this was very scary, and helpful!

Define 'normal' dinner. There was never any doubt why I was gigantic.:D

This is just disturbing because nowhere are calories listed on the menu. Whoever said that all restaurants should have to list caloric content wasso spot on. At least have it available either on request or on the table with the dessert menu. It is not right for people to have to guess or just flat out not know. I may still have ordered the darn thing- it is tasty- but at least i could not be surprised by the amount of calories.
I have not had one of those in so long. Memories.........

Yeah I know, there was nothing 'normal' about those dinners...decent into caloric hell was more like it.

Ever since I started this thing I have been wishing that restaurants would post the nutritional information just so I can make an educated decision about what I eat. Oh well, here's hoping.

I bought the book, "Eat this not that" Its really helpful!!!

I can't honestly recall eating much from either of these two sites--ever. I think more so because we've always been too poor to afford much in the was of fast food. Any chicken salads I have had have almost always been from home.

Bran muffins have pretty much been one of the only things on that list I've had. But I think my problem is more the amount of food I eat over what I'm eating.

But thanks for the links, they'll be helpful for future dates :D

I wholeheartedly agree, AbbaGirl...restaurants should HAVE to print nutritional information for all menu items. Or at least have the information available for a customer if he/she wants it.

I mean, what is WRONG with a restaurant's food if they're afraid to show customers what's in it?

Texas Roadhouse used to be my favorite place to eat, but since they won't print nutritional information anymore, I won't go back. I went to Applebee's with the husband over the weekend, thinking I'd looked up their menu's calorie counts before and found good things. Well obviously I hadn't. I got there and the entire menu was different from the last time I ever went. I ended up getting the honey BBQ chicken sandwich, and ate maybe half of the fries with it. Could've done worse, but also could've done better (Off the weight watchers part of the menu, maybe).

Went home to look up the calories and couldn't find anything, anywhere, other than their Weight Watchers menu. The excuse from corporate was that they had "so many restaurants around the country it would be impossible to keep track of them all."

Yeah, so a business with identical, or nearly identical, menus everywhere can't figure out how many calories are in its foods? Please.

There's a book that I've mentioned a bunch... Mindless Eating.. by doctor something or antoher.. in the book he refences a study or two that points out.. even if nutrition info is presented - people will still choose to ignore it... or overeat in other areas because they think they are eating lower calorie.. (the study involved people eating at subway -which posts it's nutrition info on their napkins, vs mcdonalds - in most cases -people got out of mcdonalds with lower calories...

Begin rant...
I hate the mindset that people are not willing to take responsiblity for what they put into their mouths and want info hand fed to them and don't want to use common sense - On no planet are a huge portion of deep fried potatoes smothered in cheese smothered in ranch dressing even remotely considered healthy or even low calorie...

I agree with your rant, Mal...when people argue that McDonald's made them fat, when nobody is responsible for putting the food into their mouths BUT themselves.

I don't want to be necessarily be hand-fed the information, because I am able to make those good choices. But at the same time, a person can order something like a chicken sandwich or grilled chicken breast off a menu and have it come out slathered in sauce/butter, etc. that makes it as bad as a cheeseburger. I just want restaurants to be truthful in what they're putting out, because the description on a menu and what you actually get on your plate can be totally different. If I'd noticed the sandwich I had over the weekend had a small note beside it saying it clocked in at 850 calories and 26 grams of fat, I would've gone with something else, entirely. Which is probably why they don't do it.

I think I got lucky at Applebee's....the sauce was minimal and there were no other condiments. I could've done without the bread...but anyway....I'll know next time to stick with the Weight Watchers stuff.
