Turkey Burger Diet

I know...diets don't work...but hypothetically if I ate only lean packaged turkey burgers with no bread...and maybe a salad...and ocassionally eat energy bars, or watermelon in between...combined with treadmill (thats in my living room) time....could I lose significant weight?

Ive started today so far...

No, because it's not enough calories or variety in your diet. Yes, you'll drop pounds at first but your body can't survive on such little food and will start storing fats and it'll just make you very poorly. Can I ask how much you weigh and how tall you are?

I'm 5'7 and for the past 3 months ive been going from between 243-250.

yea, you need to seriously up your cals or your just going to be hurting yourself.

But I was thinking if I ate a boiled egg and a burger for breakfast....2 for lunch....2 for dinner...and fruits and bars in between that that would be enough? and the salad? But I don't know much about weight loss

Male or female? And age? (or age range ;)) Sorry for the questions but I'm going to figure out your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate; the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day!)

Right, so your BMR is 1958.7. So to *maintain* the weight you are right now, you need to eat close to 2000 calories. Obviously you want to drop some weight and not maintain so I'd say a deficit of around 500 calories is a good start. Maybe drop down to eating between 1400-1600 to start with (combined with exercise).

Eating turkey burgers and salad wont get you near that number (unless you eat them in large quatities) so I suggest you vary your diet up. Read some diaries round here and get some food ideas. Plenty of people on here have lost weight having a really nice, balance and varied diet that doesnt consist of eating the same ol' stuff!!

xx

I found this online:

Calculate Calories to Lose Weight
One pound of body fat is equivalent to 3,500 calories — which means a person must cut that many calories from her diet to lose a single pound. By eliminating 500 calories a day, she will lose one pound in a week. So, if your daily caloric need is 1917.9875 to maintain your weight, subtract 500 from that, and you'll have the number of calories you can consume each day and still lose a pound in one week. In this case: 1,417.9875 calories.

So take out 500 calories from your normal daily calorie intake (around 2000 to maintain) and you'll drop a pound a week. With exercise, it'll be more! :D

Thank you so much

I'd also suggest going onto a site like sparkpeople or fitday (google) as there you can put in all your food and find out how much you eat for the day and how much of what you're eating falls under "healthy" amounts for say fat, carbs, sugar etc. Maybe have a go entering what you'd eat BEFORE you started your diet and then compare it to what you're having now and then hunt around online and on here for standerd healthy meals. I know Weight Watchers have a great food programme and I'm sure there are a bunch of other healthy recipe ideas around!

Good luck!

There are alot of really good, educational threads around the forum...particularly under the "on topic" section. PLEASE take the time to read these!

I believe in eating healthy, getting proper nutrients and just being active in general. However, yes you would be able to lose the weight. If it's enough to get you motivated, it would be fine to do it short-term. Trust me... it takes weeks and weeks to destroy your metabolism. Also, even if you do succeed in destroying your metabolism it will only drop to 40%ish.

I've lost a majority of my weight by eating at around 2400-2700 calories, but I've dipped as low as sub 1000 for 5 weeks and my metabolism wasn't messed up in the least bit.

If I could make a suggestion... get some protein powder, chicken, tuna and stuff instead of turkey burgers. Eat sub 1000 calories and make sure all those calories are coming from protein, also, toss in a few walnuts, almonds, natural peanut butter for some fats. Another thing, you need a really good multi-vitamin if you're going to go to an extreme like this, and a nice fish oil pill. I'd go with Opti-fem Multi Vitamin ($37 dollars in Canada for a 2 month supply,) and I use "Now" Super EPA fish oil pills.

Your energy levels will be extremely low due to the drop in carbs, but as least you will not be living off processed crap and you will at least be getting some decent nutrients. Your muscle will thank you too... eating limited food with little to no protein is a recipe for disaster once you come off this and start eating regularly.
