Tubing

Hi,

I'm a 37 year old male, 5'10, 160lbs. I recently started Karate with my son and would like to increase my strength and fitness.

My goal is to increase strength, flexibility and cardio fitness whilst adding approx 15lbs of muscle mass - I don't want to be big - just stronger and not quite so "lean".

After some good advise from people on the Weight Training forum I'm looking at a program based on push-ups, chin ups, pull ups, step ups (stair climbing) crunches etc. I will also be doing some bike riding for cardio work.

I was wondering using tubing for additional exercises will help me with my goals of adding some muscle mass as well as strength.

Your best bet would probably to be using weights instead of exercise tubing... Exercise Tubing is used more for rehab purposes and "toning"... I haven't seen anyone using tubing to gain muscle mass for the fact that the tubing resistance goes to a certain level and then stops, so you really can't advance after you get to that max. tube resistance.

Thanks for your input.

I was considering using tubing along with the bodyweight exercises for the first few months as I have not lifted weights for 15 years.

By doing this I was hoping to building strength and tone, hopefully building a bit of mass as well. Once I have stuck to this program consistantly (and reached the resistance level of the tubing) I could increase the resistance by use of weights.

Does this sound like a valid plan ?

You will gain mass, but maybe not as fast as if you used weights, so if that's what you want, then that would be an option.. There is tons of ways to do different exercises with theraband... If you'd like, I could give you a bunch of those exercises unless you want to look for them yourself or you already know them...
