Hi everyone, what a great site! I am a working 42 year old mom of three teens looking to get in shape. I work out at the fitness room where i work almost every day. I've been at it for 4 weeks and have only missed 2 day's. I warm up on the treadmill for 5 - 10 min. then 25-30 min on the elyptical machine followed by 5 - 10 min on the stationary bike. Then i do stretches. How long does it take to start seeing results, or am i missing something i should be doing? I have noticed my calves and thighs tonning a little but my hips are still jiggly lol. I am 5 ft and weigh 120...that's alot for me. Most of my adult life i have stayed between 112 and 115 lbs. My kids tell me i have to do weight bearing exercises and that i should be jogging not walking on the treadmill. I usually set the treadmill at about 3.8 m.p.h. Any suggestions would be verty appreciated!
First of all, welcome to the board. Yes your children are correct, you should be doing some weight training. Be sure to train your whole body. As far as walking/jogging, I think if you are walking at a brisk pace, then walking is effective. Is jogging effective, yes, it is also a bit harder on your joints. So really it is your choice there. I personally choose to walk at a brisk pace and vary the incline. Diet is also vital. Drink lots of water also. Good luck
I have read that thin and/or small frame persons especially women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than others. Weight bearing exercise may help prevent osteoporosis. Being you are small framed I think it would be worth your while to strength train if for nothing else to possibly help prevent future osteoporosis. My mom who turned 73 Sat. was small like you when she was young and is now suffering from it. She has recently broken both arms (one at a time) and in the past has broken her foot and a wrist twice. Just a thought.
