Troubles with core workout

Hope im posting this in the right area. Anyways little about me first, I quit smoking 3 weeks ago and started a regular workout routine as my new years resolution. I am 25 years old, 5'7" and i weight 230lbs....ya i know. Most of it is in my stomach, love handles, butt, and upper legs but the bulk of it is in my beer keg (Quit drinking also btw and am eating healthy, regular meals). My equipment consists of a Diamondback st1900 stairmaster and a Torque F5 home gym (my pride and joy), all of which are serving me well thus far.

Now to my problem. I have elected to stay away from doing the core exorcises on the F5 at first so I can gain some basic strength in that area, as i have never worked it before. But doing crunches or situps dont work for me at this point as there is so much flab in that area its hard for me to do them properly. I went on youtube and found a video of this and tried it out with the same results. When I attempt these it feels like all I am doing is pulling the muscles in my neck to the point of overstraining them. I try using my back as much as I can but it is painful to keep up.

Anyone know of the proper way to go about building strength in this area (or more so a way of thinning it out as opposed to toning the muscle underneith) so i dont end up hurting myself?

Best regards!

The guy in that video is a tool bag.

But anyways... by doing compound movements like squat variations, lunge variations, deadlift variations, etc, your core will naturally strengthen.

If you'd like, you can toy around with full or modified planks, too. If your machine has cables, you can also try pallof presses.

Keep in mind, getting lean is a function of losing fat while maintaining (or even building) muscle. You're not going to magically spot reduce or spot tone a specific area of your body using a specific or special exercise. That's not how the human body works.
