Triceps Muscle Strain? (long head of triceps)

I have a lot of pain in my long head of the triceps right at the very top around where it connects to the arm pit but a little more on the underside of my arm (if that makes sense).

It was hurting me a little a few days ago and then I really hurt it doing windshield wipers (ab exercise). Basically I was hanging from the pullup bar and when my legs went over the my right side all the weight pulling down on my arm just hurt my tricep even more.

I can actually do push movements fine with my arm, even some tricep exercises. It's only when there is weight pulling my arm down when my arm is in a straight position that it hurts.

So basically hanging from a pull-up bar, carrying a weight plate with my arm fully extended, even trying to reach behind my back with that arm...all of those really hurt my tricep. Bending down to touch my toes hurts too when I get to the bottom and I'm really stretching my arm out...however I can bench 225 lbs with almost no pain...

Anyway, I think it's a muscle strain, but if anyone can offer any other advice I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Zach

Just a little update, but I've done some more research and I'm worried I may have done something to my teres major muscle...I'm hoping it's not a tear, but can you pull/strain this muscle? thanks for any help.

For the record, you can strain any muscle.

A strain is just another word for partial tear. If it was a complete tear, though, you wouldn't be able to use that muscle at all and would be in much more severe pain than you seem to be.

So, for treatment...if something hurts, then stop doing whatever that something is, for starters. Other than that, ice or heat as needed (ice would be better for the pain but heat may help the healing a little bit due to the circulation increase) and when the injury starts to heal (indicated by noticeably less pain) then you can begin to do some gentle stretching. Again, if it hurts, then don't do it.

Hey man!

I was searching around and found an incredible blog dedicated to restoring mobility and range of motion:

The most recent post, "Triceps Smash", has some really great therapeutic techniques to help eliminate some of that stiffness you feel and hopefully speed up that recovery!
