Treating knee injury, can i self physio?

Hey all.

Just need some quick advice on knee physiotherapy.

About six months ago my knee was agony and the doctor sent me for an x-ray, which came back clear. however, it felt more like ligament damage than a fracture to me, but after a month or so it cleared up.

Until about 4 weeks ago, where i had a continual discomfort, the knee felt twisted so i stopped the cardio and squats for a while. Then this monday i decided to get back out as it had been ok for a few days.

So maybe the HIIT session on soggy ground and tall grass wasnt the smartest thing to do, and the morning after it felt like someone had stuck a knife under the lower part of my knee. My dad has had cartilage since his early 30's (he's now had both removed) and im waiting to have the same problem. its ok now but not as strong as the other one.

The doctor has referred me to a physio after a telephone appointment, but i have no idea when this will be as they will be contacting me, and as i live in the UK my faith in our NHS is dubious at best. Apparantly the physio will determine whether i need an op or just some corrective exercises.

So my main question is what can i be doing in the meantime? Can i start my own physio?

My guess is that the cause is squatting too heavy (i have strong legs, far more so than any other part of me) or too badly (i dont think so?!?!?).

All this comes as im cutting so my current cardio is limited aside from football (and i know thats not the best thing to do), but i fnd if im too careful with it it gets stiff and more uncomfortable.

Thanks to all Ben

did the doc check to see if your knee was unstable in any way? to see if you had damaged any of the ligaments, if not, thats very weird, thats the first thing they did with me when i had knee pain, though that was after being hit by a car. I would just avoid anything that hurts, until you know what is wrong, you cant really do much about it.

The doctor gave me a telephone appointment, rather than actually seeing me. The physio will decide whats up when i see him.

The National Health service is a wonderful and terrible thing.

is there anything i can be doing in the meantime to keep strength up on the knee? a mate of mine did both his acls and spent most of his time on the wobble board

need to know what the problem is for that. I know i did some wobble board after my knee injury, if it doesnt hurt, its probobly safe.

Yeh Dont think anyone can give any advice on that until your diagnosed.

It would be helpfull if you told us how you injured your knee in the first place?

But its likely you've done one of your ligaments or meniscus, i believe its probably the meniscus. Unless you get an MRI you wont know for sure.

Assuming its the meniscus, and depending on the location and extent of the tear will determine if an op is likely. However squats would be a big no no because the amount of stress they give on the knee you could damage it more.

But in the mean time you can buy elastic bands with differing strengths to work your leg muscles..
