Treadmill VS. Elliptical

If I cannot run on the treadmill due to a bad left knee, will I still be able to burn the same amount of calories and fat if I'm on the elliptical machine the same amount of time and at a level 9 resistance ???

I find the elliptical machine more difficult. You'll burn calories according to how high you get your heart rate up.

The elliptical is a great machine. If you want to maximize your time and burn the most calories try to do intervals. It has a program set in the machine for intervals which is a good starting point. As you get acclamated with intervals you can start challenging it up by designing your own.

Also when on the elliptical make sure your feet stay flat on the machine the entire time. A common mistake is lifting your heels with each stride.

You should do fine with the elliptical

I have done some research on the effectiveness of treadmills verses elliptical trainers and they supposedly give very similar results working for the same amount of time at the same intensity. The difference on the elliptical is the lack of impact on the lower body. If you have an injured knee I assume this is the reason you are looking at them. The lower impact actually gives the feeling of lower perceived exertion so you don't "fee"l like you are working as hard, which is why many people like them. I personally like both treadmills and ellipticals and have found both to be equally effective for me. I think you will do well with the elliptical trainer. Good luck!

It is all about the intensity of the workout not about which piece of cardio equipment is better. If you don't leave your "comfort zone" you will have no benefit.

The treadmill is more diverse and can be use to teh ultimate extrem. An eliptical is not real training and only appears to work, but offers too low of body resistance to be a true fitness apparatus. People like the elipitical because it's relatively easy.
