Treadmill to track?

So I'm trying to shift my running program from indoors at the gym on a treadmill to the outdoors, since it more accurately mimicks the kind of training I'm going to be involved in at boot camp.

I thought I was doing pretty good on the treadmills (8 minute run, 2 minute walk) but when I went for a run outside, it was SO much harder. Partially because of the cold weather, but that couldn't explain all of why I can run 8 minutes on a treadmill and barely make it half a block on the street.

Anybody got any tips on making the transition a little easier? (Other than the Couch to 5K Plan, which I'm going to implement soon.)

I noticed that over the summer when I was training for the 60 mile walkI did... walking outside was a lot more challenging than walking on the treadmill and my time was no where near what i was getting on the treadmill...

Make sure you're mouth/nose are covered if it's chilly out -it helps to warm up the air you take in - breathing in the cold air makes it a little harder.
and make sure you're properly stretched..

You didn't start running on the treadmill right away so take the same approach -just ease into it- walk some - jog some - run some.. the couch 2 5 k audio program should help with that -the music's a ltitle cheesey but it can help.

I've always wondered how people could get those fast times on the treadmill. I'm a good walker at this point, and can barely do a 14-minute mile - for a mile, if I'm going as fast as I can walk. But I only walk outside.

On days I want to jog, I do the "walk when you want to, jog when you want to" method of alternating. Knowing I don't have to keep going makes it easier to keep going.
