Training. The old way.

I dont know about anyone else but I am broke right now. I am in college and my gpa is great.(3.9) but my life is lacking something. I love to train. I like Muay Thai but it cost so much. I just wish people would go back to the old ways and train people for free and run the gyms on charity. I meet people who know Muay Thai and they just dont want to train me because they feel hey what am I getting out of it. I understand that but not everyone is rich. I was close to just packing my bags and traveling until I find someone to train me but my family keeps saying that its a dumb idea. Anyone else feel like this? I know its strange but thats who I feel. I even looked up a Shaolin Temple. They train you but they want you to pay them 370 for 2 weeks. It kills me. I guess there is no other way to do it. Hey anyone got a rich mom they want to throw my way?

370 every 2 weeks!?! No way would I ever pay that much.

My brazilian jui jitsu gym just had Sean Sherk(ufc lightweight champ) come in and train our MMA guys. The cost of that session was only 100 bucks. Our standard fee for Kickboxing, BJJ gi and no gi, MMA, and Judo classes combined is only 85 bucks per month. That plan gets you unlimited classes. Pretty reasonable. Most places in Oklahoma charge about the same.

However, if your broke just go get a thai book or use the internet and work on the moves with a buddy. I had a friend that went from being the kid that had to give up his lunch money to being one of the most avoided/toughest kids in school. He taught himself. He was dedicated though. Obsessed with martial arts even.

Look into your options, and open your eyes -- the world isn't some kung fu movie. The Shaolin Temple just as, if not more commercialized than the a lot of the schools you find now.

"Training the old way" usually meant sacrificing your entire life to learn something. If while reading the last sentence, you thought how cool and admirable that would be, then you're full of **** and are exactly the kind of person that will be taken advantage of by many people out there.

So here's what you, being a sensible person should do: look into your area to find all that you can, check them out, see if you can try a trial class or watch a class, and talk to the instructors about your situation.

In the mean time, keep conditioning yourself.

.........but my life is lacking something. :

a good enough long term outlook and partner maybe??

Leiyunfat's right .. there are definately sacrifices involved in commiting to one thing over another.

I actually diid that! I packed up my life and went out to shaolin and taught english to get by .. aand could've easily stayed and bought a nice house and kept training for free and so on.
but the point comes ( for me 3 yrs laater,)where there's other stuff you want to acheive in life aswell. . and being in a place where you don't really have anyone you can communicate properly with to share it all with presents all sorts of other issues . about why you're running away and what sorrt of partner you want and so on and so forth.

I just read your other post about 'how to do when so poor' and really!. just stick it out and train at home... even if conditioning is all you can manage ..You're studying for a long term goal that will meean that from then on thereafter you don't have to be poor. In the meantime just train at home and eat well and plan your study so it's going to set you up for the long term. You don't haave to be a superstar right now. AS long you stay focussed and move towards that, you'll just put it altogether later when it counts ( for it's longevity) and for a better picture than you could've otherwise.

It's only temporary but there are loads of us out here doing this. There'll always be an opportunity to bail for one reason or other alternative path and future but hang in there if you think your goal is worth getting. Just plann that goal ( or future )well and clearly know what you want and why and you'll be fine.

Go to russbo.com and check Doc out. He grew up poor and alone to a single mum and now all he dooes is spend his kazillions in mainly shaolin related activity and train and enjoy what he worked and sacrificed for..

Now if only we can find him a girl who'll stick around .. whole other conversation.

Blooming Lotus.

I brought Doc into it because he could serve as good source of inspiration regarding the benifits financially and lifestyle wise of sticking it out through tough times to acheive something worthwhile.
Working hard through rough times and poverty or whatever other adversity to truly end up better off longterm.

Considering the lack of support he had growing up, and all the crap he went through to get there, He 's one of the best western role models for it I've ever known of . it's nice to know that's out there.
It makes me want to step up myself.

( some of ) We all just want to be free to train , but unfortunately or not, money needs to be earned , food eaten ,and future survival and anticipated loniless considered aswell. it catches up and when you're thaat good.. it's nice to think you could have someone next to you who won't sh*t you or that you can't help but find ..subordinate or above you later aswell :(. ..
that alone has got to be worth it.. and the older you get with less time and patience to muck about, more so.

alls fun and glory when all you do is train.. but blah blah, .blahblah, blah .

Yeah Tae Kwon Do(spelling?) has a saturated market though. We have 3-4 in Norman alone and they have to compete with each other for the consumer. The rarer arts have less competition and can afford to hike prices a bit. Aikido is quite expensive here because we only have a couple places that offer it in the whole state. Certainly anything over 100 dollars per month would be rediculous though reguardless of the art. In todays society most martial arts are useless anyhow. I havent been in a real fight (excluding spats with my brother) in 9 years..lol. I joined bjj to fill that need in a safe and legal way.

I agree, things just aren't that physical anymore. Furthermore, I'm beginning to think that fighting is a normal part of human interaction, especially in the young and adolecent years. Fighting, not in terms of "surviving," but more of a social learning tool...I don't know, I'll have to think about it.

But yeah, prices all vary from place to place, the best thing you can do is figure out the options that are open to you. Hell, if you're willing to drive 30 min to the next town, do so. But it's all subjective in terms of the magnitude you're willing to go.
