training help

hi everyone, this is my first post, so I don't know if I am in the correct place.

I want to start going to the gym to build some muscle and reduce my weight. The problem is, I have never been a exercise guy. I am currently 24 years old and weight 87 kg ( I think is around 190 lbs). The last time i did exercise was 5 years old, I used to be a cross country runner in my high school.

I would like some tips on what to do. I have accumulated some fat on the stomach and obliques, and neck :( but I have thin arms and no shoulders whatsoever.

I would like to develop shoulders, grow my arms, flat my stomach, well, have a nice body overall.

So please if you could give me some tips. For instance, do I need to reduce the fat before I start doing weights?, or should i stick with cardio forsome time?..

Thanks for the help!

I went straight into weights, im 25 and weigh something in the region of 210lbs (18 Stone)

Start slow, learn the techniques first before thinking about doing weights. Dont worry about other people, dont worry that there bigger then you, lifting more etc

Join a Gym, most gyms will give you a free program every six months and when you join, tell them what you want to achieve.

Doing weights will give you a general level of fitness, i lost a stone doing weights. Also my fitness is better, before i did weights my resting heart rate was 105-110 now its down in the 80's

Weight lifting wont get you very fit, you cant beat cardio for that. But, your still burning calories doing weights, and i belive that doing weights first, building your muscles is best.

Its also more fun, build your muscle up, your body requires more energy to function = quicker weight loss

my 2 cents
