Torn Calf Muscle

Ok, so I started running again after about 10 years of not doing anything. I have been following a couch to 10K program and it is working pretty darn good. The problem is, I am on week 3 about to move into week 4 and I tore my calf muscle. Granted it's a grade 2 and it will heal in aroughly 4-6 weeks, but in the mean time what can I do to help speed up the healing and what can I do when I start back running to prevent it from happening again. I know that I have to start slow and work back up to where I was, but I just don't want this to happen again because I genuinely love to run. Also, what is something that I can do while standing to get my heart rate up? I was thinking about a modified form of shadow boxing where I just move my upper body. Thanks.

the typical heat and ice, of course, is crucial. The last major injury i had, i was sure to ice it on a regular schedule and my recovery increased 10-fold.

You'll find it hard to do much full out cardio (including shadow boxing) because of the required use of your calves. However, you can still do weight / resistance training and if you do high reps with lower weights and take little breaks, you can still get a good cardio workout.

Have you talked to a physio? They are usually filled with good ideas.

I've been there done that on the torn calf muscle. My advice - rest it as much as possible in the early stages. That's exactly what I didn't do and my recovery took many months because of it. As for exercise, I found that cycling was ok, (though possibly an expert will come along soon and tell you I'm an idiot and you shouldn't be cycling), swimming is surely ok too. I didn't have access to a pool, but did take the odd swim in a nearby river and it seemed fine on the calf. all the best for your recovery
