Too much Spam

I haven't been an *active* member of my other forums in a while, but I had noticed, based on the size of the forum in members the spam seems to increase.

You just learn to tune them out.

If you visit youtube often, you'll notice people will spam different types of videos in the same manner. Well, a more defined and topic specific manner.

i.e. I post and watch a lot of videos made based on or from game play from World of Warcraft and there is a constant stream of spam regarding "private servers" and "leveling services" which in the end lead to hacked accounts, but that is another story in itself.

Again, just something you have to learn to live with.

I don't learn to tune them out. I have this forum in an RSS reader and I have to scan and delete more than half of the posts. The ratio is definitely getting worse.

I actually had to look up what an RSS reader is.....

Well. Put bluntly, I would probably never use one and if I were to use one, I would not use one for a forum. Unless I am missing something in how an RSS reader works, that just sounds like a really, really bad idea.

There's only a few things here I want to read about and if I stumble across a post with an intriguing title, I'll click it. No way I would ever want a summary of every new post here every day.

Even still, with an RSS reader, you can read the part about the new, unlocked cellphones for sale and say, hmmm, prolly don't want to read this one, unless you're in the market for a new, unlocked cellphone.

it's January. all spammers are out to hit the New Years resolution crowd on the fitness forums. There isn't much we can do about it, but encourage people to click on the "report spam" link (triangle with exclamation point) so we can delete it faster

Same here.

Lettuce, RSS readers are a great way to stay updated on forums, and I rarely visit forums that don't have them.

A big part of what we mods do is get rid of the spam posts. But your RSS feed has probably been downloaded before we get to half of them.

This is my first day in here and I've noticed that there are so many bots and spam engines! they are kind of taking over the forum. There are software programs that can be installed on the server to prevent such things.

please share because I've added a lot of mods to this forum that catch a lot of the spam, but spammers always seem to be ahead of the actual programs to stop them.

Sean, any idea why this place gets nailed so much more than WLF? WLF seems to have much more traffic but it doesn't get near the spam this place does.

combination of a few things. there are usually lists of websites that these people target. Once you get on the list, you are hooped.

Actual visitors, this site has almost double WF. WF has way more active users, though. People come here from search engines, get what they want, and leave. We rank in search engines way higher on a lot of the keywords here than on WF because the market for weight loss is a lot more competitive.

Gotcha... makes sense.
