Too fat for the bike?

I used to bike every day to school (remained fat, but this is irrelevant to my topic).

But, eventually, all of the back tires on all of the bikes somehow deflated. I don't know how, but there are people who have suggested it's because I'm on the fat list.

Well, at the time I was about 270lbs I think, now I'm a bit less than that. I was considering buying new tires for the bike, but I don't want to waste money if it is just because I'm too fat.

Do bikes have a weight limit?

Also, (this next question belongs in the exercise forum I'm sure, but since I've already started typing the main question here) is biking a lot of stress on the ankle as compared to say, running?

I have a friend who weighed 320 lbs and he got into mountain biking. He had to get a heavy duty bike to handle the stress of all the bumps and jumps and such. Regular road bikes were not a problem for him. Just make sure to check your tire pressure each time you ride and pump it up to maximum.

What kind of tires do you use on your bike?

Have you tried getting tires with thicker tread and heavier/thicker tubes?

I think that the number of spokes your tires have can relate to their weight limit. But I'm unsure if that has to do with getting flat tires or if it is related to bending the frame.

As for your second question. I'm not a runner, but I believe that riding a bike would cause more stress on your knees rather than your ankles.

You can get heavier duty tires that are kevlar reinforced, so I dont think weight should be a limit... just dont get super lightweight stuff.

Biking is absolutely lower stress on all joints, especially ankles since it is zero impact. To reduce knee stress make sure your seat is high enough that the most you need to bend your leg is 90 degrees at the top of the pedal stroke.
