Hi everyone my name is Tony I am 50 years old and was told 4/14/09 that I had diabetes, over the last 30 years I have let my body go to crap when I got out of high I weighed 185 lbs on 4/14/09 I weighed in at 421 lbs my goal weight is 200lbs.

Well I had a long talk with myself that day and made up my mind to do everything I could to get some weight off, I went to a dietician the next day and she told me the things to do to work on getting my diabetes under control.

I started eating 60g of CARBS at a meal and a snack with 15g mid mourning and doing some walking well a month later I had lost 12lbs and could really tell a difference in my stamina.

6/5/09 I bought a good bicycle and my 30 year old daughter gave my girlfriend her bike and we started to ride everyday started out with 10 min. rides because that’s all I could do after a month we are doing 25 min. rides and I had lost 30lbs.

8/10/09 we started going to the gym and working with a trainer 3 days a week ½ hr workouts with a nice bike ride after we are done and then a good stretch.

My 25 year old son has joined the gym with us and started working out with us also so that helps keep me going too.

8/24/09 I had a check-up with my Dr and the results came out great from my blood work my A1c was at 5.8 down from 8.1, even my cholesterol was down to normal levels and I was down to 376 lbs that’s a 45 lb loss since 4/14/09.

Tony,
I'm a Missouri boy myself. Have you ridden on the Katy Trail? Your story is inspiring. It's amazing what a disease can do to change your focus. You are also sending an important message to your son about the importance of the choices we make and I'm sure he is proud of you for your efforts. Keep it up.

Hi Glenn,

We are looking forward to riding some of the Katy Trail one of our goals is to ride from Boonville to Sedalia next summer as of now we have not been on the Katy yet.

We did drive up to Watkins Mills State Park in July to see my Mom and Dad and we road the trail around the lake there it was 3.8 miles we did have to stop and take a couple of breaks as some of the hills killed us newbes....LOL

All 3 of my kids are very happy that I have been working on my health and both my girlfriend and my son going to the gym are a great help.

The young man helping us at the gym has been great so far.

Go see the Dietician tomorrow for a weigh-in

Hey, Tony, just wanted to say good job so far. You're making rapid strides towards better health.

45 pounds since April is excellent.

Funny, I started my journey in April, too.

Keep up the good work, look forward to reading more.

Hey Tony.

Thanks for stopping by my diary. It really does help to hear encouraging words from other people.
It looks like you are doing great on your exercise - and 45 pounds already - I can't wait till I get there!!

Good luck on your weigh in and dietician appt.

See you around,
Sallybean

9/1/09 Finally got my bike out of the shop it's been 2 weeks, I sure have lost some leg strength in that time.

Did a ride afterwork of 1.67 miles in just under 10 minutes and I rode the same route at 9:15 for another 1.67 miles.

Did not make it to the gym today my son and I pulled the motor and transmission out of our drag car we hurt it this past Saturday at Ford Fest Kansas City.

I did screw up it was after 8pm before I got to eat Dinner and I was lazy so I stoped and got a Taco Salad @ Taco Bell over 900 cal and almost 50 grams of fat plus 80g of carbs, I had no idea it would be that bad:eek::cry:

Yeah, most of those fast food "salads" are actually pretty deadly.

Hi Tony!

Wonderful job so far. You are truly inspiring :)

And don't worry too much about the Taco Salad. The main thing is that you know now how bad it is and will be less likely to eat it again :)

Congratulations again!

9/2/09 I had my appointment with the Dietician my weight was down another 4 lbs:hurray: making my total weight loss 50lbs next goal is 100lbs.

We talked about adding more protein so she wants me to add a 30g carb and a min of 8g protein snack between lunch and dinner and then after my workout that is 2 hrs after dinner.

Worked out with the trainer today it may not seem like much of a workout to some but I was shocked I could do it, he took us across the street to the high school track and we did 100 yard runs as fast as I could go then walked the corner then the next 100 yards we did 2 laps like that then one more 100 my times for the 100 was 33 seconds, 28s, 25s, 25s and the last one was 23.5 the last time I can remember running was my sons freshman year in high school and he just turned 25.

The we did the steps in the stadium at a brisk walk just a guess on the number of steps is 50 per isle and there is 6 isles when we went up we would go backwards half way then trun around forward the rest of the way up.

Then we did a cool down lap of the track

All total this took us about an hour to complete.

Have a great day everyone:waving:

9/3/09 Our trainer had us on a lite day today only did a 20 minute bike ride averaged just over 10 miles an hour we did stop in the park just to enjoy the afternoon.

It was my girlfriends first day back on the bike in over 2 weeks so she had a little problem on the hills on the way back home so I went on to the house and got my truck and went and picked her up, she has a knee that gives here some trouble but thats ok I am just glad she is going with me.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

9/4/09 We had a great workout with our trainer today he put us thru a 1hr session of circuit training we did a 3x10 of dumbbell bench on the exercise ball, a 3x10 of bench rows using the exercise ball, a 3x10 of body squats, a 3x10 of lat pull downs using resistance cords, a 3x10 of set downs one each leg, a 3 x10 of dumbbell curl-press’s then 2 full set of 10 second planks then a 10 minute cool down on the tread mill at 2 miles an hr.

Had a little trouble using the same amount of weight I used the last time we did this workout I think after talking to the trainer that I may be guilty of over training I have been going everyday then added the bike back in this week after I got it out of the shop.

So Jordon our trainer told us to take a couple of days this weekend and only do a short easy 20 min bike ride each day and to sat away from the gym unless it rained then it would be ok to do the exercise bike at the gym so I guess I will listen to him this time, but I will tell you something I never in my wildest dreams thought I would say, not going to the gym will be hard as I enjoy going and working out so much.

Until next time you all take care

I totally understand.

You get hooked on it. It becomes a part of your lifestyle and when you don't/can't do it you feel sucky. I'm facing that right now because my gym and pool are closed.

Sounds like a pretty solid workout your trainer has you doing. What weight DBs are you using for those moves?

Overtraining is bad. I understand the urge to do more, but it bites you on the ass when that extra workout you squeezed in means you have to take a week off to let your muscles recover.
Remember - don't resistance train two days in a row.

Dumbbell bench on the exercise ball I used 45lbs

Bench rows using the exercise ball I used 45lbs

Curl Press's I used 25lbs

The lat pull downs I used 2 bands this is a modified lat pull down really we do it with the bands over the pull-up bar on the cable machine I set down on the floor feet siraight out in front the you pull down and rotate your palms out it's tough as hell.

I really like Jordon's methods he keeps it interesting we train with him 2 days a week for 1/2hr and then he puts the third day on paper for us the last 2 sesions have been 1hr with no extra charge for the extra 1/2hr.

Those are pretty serious weights, at least by my standards.

I find benching 45lb DBs to be just about at my limit, doing 5x5. I don't think I could handle 3x10, and on a ball yet.

That's pretty skookum.

It was a lot tougher yesterday than it has everbeen before, I was having trouble controlling it, about halfway thru the second set Jordon ask me what was up he said " you have never had this much trouble with that weight before" then I went to the set-downs and had trouble there too.

Thats when he told us we had to take the next 2 days off from the gym.

I really think he knows what hes doing.
