A few days ago I started getting pain in my 5th (smallest) toe on my left foot.
It's in the joint at the base.
About 8-10 years ago I had fractured the growth plate in that toe.
I went to the doctor and he looked at it. Movement was fine. The joint was aligned properly, and there was no need for x-rays. He did however note that I had an enlarged growth of bone around the joint. He explained that sometimes when there's a fracture, the body will grow a bit of extra bone around the location of the injury.
His advice to me was to get my shoes customized to accomodate the extra bone.
Except I hadn't been wearing footwear of any sort for at least a week or two before I got this inflamation.
I've had this pain before, so it's not completely new. But this came at a time when I'd been barefoot for quite awhile, and doing no sort of hard impact activities on my feet.
I'm somewhat worried about this. I can walk with no limping or anything now, but it does hurt. But will it get worse over 10? 20? 30 years? I'm 19, so I have a lot of life left for this to get worse, and if I'm going to have surgery, I'd like to get it while I'm still young and can recover from it better.
He said that other than this bit of overgrown bone, my feet, joints, and toes feel, and move fine.
Just wondering if it might be worth schedueling another appointment to discuss long-term complications...
