TJ- my 14 year old - 4 lifts

OK---

My kid asked me to show him some free weight lifts. I plan to teach him and his friends a few

TJ is 14, about 100 lbs, 8 pack, very lean dude.

What four lifts would you recommend?

I was thinking- bench, row, squat, and power clean.

skeptical about the power clean.. It's a great exercise, but it's very hard to learn. Maybe deadlift or RDL instead? I find RDLs easier to teach than deadlifts.. people don't know how to put stuff down. With RDLs you just tell them to picture a wall behind them and that they are to try to touch their butt to that wall. Wollah! You've got an RDL :D

squat, deadlift, row, dips, military press, bench, pullups

that is the order of difficulty to learn correctly in my opinion, but they all very important and effective.

like you said, squat, deadlift, bench, row (the 4 if you want to limit it to that. but most people already know how to do pullups, dips, and military press. perfect form(ie going down all the way on pullups and dips) just has to be reinforced.

military press? hmmm with back sopport or with body free of support? Standing?

maybe with dumbells to start-- or I may put him on a machine for that first.

he just seems so skinny...

yeah i'd put something like military or dumbbell press just to work those shoulders well, and probably pull-ups.

A good fullbody workout only has about 5 compound exercises in it, and a touch of isolation for anything that doesn't get hit well enough (like calves for example).

I have had him on isolation and machines for about 4 weeks now. He is ready to start transitioning. He is gettign stronger, but very thin.

He easily lets his hips buckle, and tends to swing weight when he gets tired, or goes to heaavy.

Hard to "contain" a 14 year old. Or a 40 year old for that matter.

free standing military press for the win. works the deltoids muscles the same as opposed to bench press, where it works the front delts more.
its a good full body lift.
start him off with a barbell with light weight

OK- I will next time.

we already went tonight!

These guys are serious, IT WAS GREAT!

AND-- check this out- they want me to come back! Prolly cuz this one guy came up and said--- "hey guys, seee that tatoo on his calve (my m-dot) he knows what the hell he is talking about, your'e in good hands" - it was very cool.

SO- we went with-

Bench- wide and close grip
Squat- Zerk, front, and back
Dead lift- RDL only-- touch the wall. that was a good hint Karky- thanks
Dips
Military Press- free standing

AND-- you guy sknow me!

YES-- you guessed it! Turkish getups! they loved that,... I had one make sure the others weight went straight up, and that made them have good form. IT WAS SO COOL TO HAVE MY SON AND HIS FRIENDS WANT ME TO HELP. and then they were even "thank you's" at the end :)

very happy FF!!

SO--- If I can-- I have 3 boys, all healthy, transitioning into free weights. Whatcha all think are the best lifts to develop their lil bodies!

ALSO-- what are you thoughts on these kids dringking slim fast as a "bulker" they eat a tone, but I was thinking they could add slimfast (calorie concentrated) to the protien shake.

dunno what slimfast is..

I think the lifts you are doing with them now are great, except I'm not a big fan of dips, since the shoulder goes through a rather extreme range of motion, but that's my opinion.

What you need to make sure with these kids is that they do the exercises right and don't hurt themselves. Make sure they never flex their spines or have their knees cave in, etc.

Slimfast is a dietary- meal replacement. I have heard it is nutritionally sound. Alot of distance triathletes athletes use it to "keep" weight. It is in addition to a complete diet.

But- it is sold as a dietarty- meal replacment drink.
here is a link to the ingredients.
click on the "low carb meal" can, and see what you think.

are they having trouble getting enough kcals as it is? I don't know why you'd want something like that over just normal food.

super skinny....

and you are probalby right...

WELL, on the other hand though Kark, ---- I dont know why you would take Protein shakes if you could just eat more food? ;)

I have a connection and get that stuff free. It is pretty expensive. Gainign weighht has never been a problem for me.

hmmmm,,

I dont like the idea, even though it was mine LOL

you get it for free?

I take protein shakes because it's hard to get a buttload of protein through regular food, unless you want to get broke from eating meat all the time :D Kcals are cheap.

but if you get it for free then by all means go ahead. But I don't really know what's in it as far as weird substances they don't list.. you never know.

yeah, I can get it for free. And I am the one buying this kids food, and he is a high metabolism skinny punk kid ;) but he's mine!
