Tired of feeling like crap

Hello Internet, I'm back.

I have been trying to overhaul my lifestyle on my own for the past six months or so, but haven't lost any weight. I have many ideas about how to improve my health, but I guess I just need some support and accountability. I basically just feel tired and gross all of the time, and I have an appointment with a naturopathic doctor in a couple of weeks to rule out any medical problems. Until then, I'd like to continue the good work and build some new habits.

Here is my scenario:

Exercise: I am a member of a power yoga studio and Orangetheory Fitness. I am pretty good about working out, but then I come home and sit around. I want to continue working out 5 days per week while improving my overall activity level.

Food: Lots of fruits and veggies. I believe in Joel Fuhrman's Eat to Live plan because when I follow it I feel less tired.

Mental: Develop a regular bedtime, join some activities and meetup groups that involve moving around outside of my house, practice mindful eating, gentle yoga, and learn other ways to relieve stress besides food.

Weight loss goal: I need to lose about 40 lbs. I want to build a bunch of muscle and gain energy and vitality

All right friends, feeling hopeful this time.

Thanks Cory :)

Happy to be back. Yesterday was OK. I went to a 75 min power yoga class as well as a gentle yoga class. Today I plan to go to yoga in about an hour as well as either an Orangetheory class or additional power yoga class in the late afternoon. I also plan to go to the supermarket to pick up some fruits and veggies.

I went to an Orangetheory class today, which is basically high intensity interval training. I am a little tired from that, but recent experience has shown that one workout per day is not enough to make a difference. My metabolism is really slow since having a baby. So the plan is to do a vinyasa yoga class as well this evening.

I went to Whole Foods and loaded up on veggies, fruit and ingredients to make soups and salads.

I need to plan active activities to do this weekend with my toddler. Weekends are a challenge for me in terms of exercise and diet.

Good thing you got your healthy shopping done. Hope you have some lemons & garlic. Take care xo Cate

Thanks Cate!

So I was sick for quite awhile and am currently fighting off another cold (my toddler picks up a lot of germs at daycare). I do have some answers though and a new potential strategy.

I went to a new doctor who ran several different tests and it turns out that I have suboptimal thyroid results, as well as an inflamed gut, low testosterone and progesterone, a vitamin D deficiency and a COQ10 deficiency (among other things which I probably forgot). I received hormone replacements, thyroid medication, and a ton of vitamins to take for the next couple of months to raise my levels. She is going to run the tests again in another 2 months to see if I'm back to normal. It was nice to get some answers and hopefully all of these interventions will optimize my health, give me a bit more energy, and increase my immunity.

Another problem I was found to have is increased insulin resistance which is essentially pre-diabetes. She wants me to go gluten-free and limit my fruit intake to two servings per day. I don't eat a lot of sugar, so this was a surprise. I think one of my medications may be raising my blood sugar, so I am going to discuss this with my other doctor.

Given that my diet is now severely restricted: dairy-free, gluten-free, sugar-free, meat-free, I needed some ideas on how to adapt to this new lifestyle. I picked up a book on Ayurvedic health called the Hot Belly Diet to try to come up with a new system of eating. The diet the author recommends easily fits into my crazy restricted dietary needs and makes intuitive sense. The most important take home messsages at this point are to eat your biggest meal at lunch rather than dinner, stop snacking between meals, and drink hot liquids throughout the day. I made a shopping list to prepare khichadi and other easy to digest foods, so I'm going to stop at the store today.

I haven't been doing a lot of exercising lately...It is easy and pleasurable to exercise when I have developed the habit, but after an illness I find it difficult to restart...motivation needed :)
