Starting weight: 471 lbs
Goal weight: 180 lbs
Time frame: 18 Months
Why: I want to lose the weight just to be a healthier person and feel more self confident.
Obstacles: tendency to over eat and emotional eating
Non-weight related goal: I want to run in the 2012 Rock and Roll Arizona Marathon

So, today is my official day one! feels good to get the "Ill start tomorrow" out of the way. I've been saying that for the past few months. As you can see from the tracker in my sig, I have a REALLY long way to go, but I'm finally up for the challenge.
I started out today with a 1.2 mile walk, it pretty much kicked my ass.The hill that's on the route that I choose is pretty steep and really hard for me to handle right now, but that's part of the reason I choose that way. Anyway, the whole walk took me just over 35 minutes. Short term goal is to get that time under 30 minutes.
Food wise, I having some steamed carrots as a post workout snack. Later on I think I'll have a whole wheat bagel with a small amount of low fat cream cheese. Not quite sure what I'll do for lunch or dinner, maybe fish of some kind with roasted/steamed veg.

Great start! I have been easing myself into exercise too. Doing 30 minutes of something every morning.

It's good you are starting to plan ahead with food. When I haven't planned out what I am going to eat that day I find myself almost going off track sometimes or eating over my calorie allowance. Everyone is different though.

It's fantastic you are setting long term and short term goals. Helps keep your spirits high when you reach the short term goals and your ultimate goal is that bit closer.

Good job! The beginning is the hardest. Once you start to see and more importantly feel the changes it will be easier to keep going.

I have lost ~125# and feel so much better, my knees and ankles no longer hurt, my back is better, I feel better about myself in general. Just keep going and you will get there. You may want to get a heart rate monitor, initially to make sure you aren't pushing too hard too fast aand later to make sure you are working hard enough.

Logging your progress helps you to see how much you have done. When you hit a plateau keep plugging along and change things up to get past it. Also finding exercise you enjoy helps to keep you doing it. When I'm out riding my bike it is fun, not exercise.

Make sure you take before during and after pictures. When I was heavy I hated to have my pic taken and so unfortunately I don't have many before pics. They help to motivate you.

GOOD LUCK & keep it up. It is SOOO worth it.

Day 2:
Hey all...thanks for he encouraging words thus far. Look forward to more positive comments. Paulk, grats on the 125 lbs, just seeing other people's triumphs help keep me inspired. I do have before pictures, and they are a huge motivator, I never want to look like this ever again. Too bad I can't keep my motivation going all day tho. Yesterday, I went out to get bagels for my breakfast. I bought 6 of them and sadly ended up eating all of them. But now I know that when I go out to buy something like that, I should only get one or two so I don't end up eating all of those extra calories. Lesson learned. Thankfully, that was my only trouble yesterday. I had some homemade soup for lunch and fish with steamed veggies for dinner. The soup was really good, I think I'll post my recipe in the recipe forums.
My morning walk went really well!! I beat my time from yesterday by almost two and a half minutes!!! I think that's a pretty good improvement for me in just one day. The uphill portion still kicked my ass, but I did the first half without needing to stop for a minute to rest. I'm looking forward to the day where I can do the whole 1.2 miles without needing even a small break.
Thanks again for all the words of encouragement. Oh, I'll be doing weight updates every Monday morning.

Congrats on making an effort to lose the weight and feel better about yourself. All bad habits can be replaced by good habits. I wish you nothing but the best. It is really good to hear of someone that wants to improve themselves. Always inspires me! Great for you and YOU WILL SUCCEED. Do not give up and remember that repetition is the mother of retention. God Bless and please keep us posted!

You're doing so well! And good to see you are acknowledging your slip ups as well as your triumphs!

Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing how you get on come Monday :)

Day 3:
Hey all, yesterday ended up being a good day! after my walk, I went to the store and spend loads of time in the produce section (for once!). For breakfast, I ended up roasting some sweet potatoes, asparagus, carrots and some cauliflower. It was amazingly good. For lunch I had some grapes and roasted chicken breast. and for dinner I made some homemade guacamole and put it on a hamburger with a whole wheat bun with some corn tortilla chips on the side. I think that was the best thing I've ever had to eat. I'm surprised, and happy, to say that I only had one hamburger! usually I go for two or three.
Today, I woke up late and missed my morning walk, so I'm going to do Power 90 (the beginner version of P90X) later on today. On the bright side, I got one of the best nights sleep I've had in a really long time. Probably due to cutting out all the junk food a few days ago. So, there's one huge incentive to keep going.
I greatly appreciate all the kind words and motivator, so please, keep them coming! I need them!!! till tomorrow!

Good job on getting started!! You'll soon be in the habit of eating healthy and going for your walks. I usually go to the gym but this last week i thought id go for a few walks outside, and i actually quite enjoyed it :)
One of the hardest things about losing weight is learning to say no. But you will learn it. Sometimes i'll be really wanting to eat some chocolate, amd so i'll let myself, its not bad to have treats sometimes. But then ill have a 25g portion and not the whole thing. If you're thinking of eating some more, take a few minutes to think if you're really hungry or not. I used to eat quite huge dinners, id put alot on my plate and i like to clear my plate lol but i see now it takes so much less than that to fill me up.
Anyway keep it up :)

You are off to a great start!! Good for you of ditching the excuses... I know how hard that is. Congrats on 1 hamburger - I know I have had a hard time stopped at "1" of anything. Keep up the good work. Way to go on your walk. I joined a gym two days ago and walked for exercise for the first time in a very long time yesterday. I only managed 20 mins so you are ahead of me ;-). Lots of luck on your journey :)

Day 3 continued

Long day. Good thing I got an afternoon nap in! I started to count calories today. It's not as bad as I thought, and it helps me see that I'm making really good choices. Here's today's count:

Chicken breast 300
tomatoes 22
lettuce 8
wheat bun 210
3 oranges 150
carrots 320 (yes, i had ALOT of carrots)
Almonds 170
Tuna 180
mayo 100
onion 30
sammich thins 200
2 apples 150
--------------------------
Total 1830

I also drank over a gallon of water today. Feels good man.

More updates tomorrow, gunna go for a walk.

Got back to walking this morning, and I improved by another 35 seconds, not huge but still progress! And when I got back to my place, I rested for a shot time then hit the bike in the apartment gym. Did that for 14 minutes which got me about 2.1 miles. Not quite sure what I'm doing for foodage today, but I have some chicken and fish in the fridge, so ill come up with something. Hope everyone has a successful day. Later

Hey !! well done on your first few days!! You are doing SO well and quite frankly, everyone who is quite overweight, hits a point in their life where they say enough is enough and they mean it. Myself included. I think you hit your time and i cant see you looking back, yes you'll have slip ups, yes youll have cheat days, we all will, but youll bounce straight back and i am certain you will hit your target.

Bit of advice, it doesnt work for everyone to set a big goal/target like the one youve set for yourself, and the one ive set for myself, so maybe set a smaller more frequent target? Like im going to set a target of loosing 20lbs before christmas, when i complete that i will get a lift from it and set a new goal to loose another 25lbs by easter (april-ish) and so on (i want to loose 90lbs in total).

Hope that helps - and keep on going! i believe in you and so should you!!

You're off to a great start. I found at the beginning it was best to keep as many tempting foods as possible out of the way as you found out with the bagels. It gets easier to resist as you get into the healthy eating lifestyle and food seems to taste nicer and nicer.
Good luck, looking forward to hearing about your weight loss.

No walk for me this morning, too much rain. So I'm going to make up for it by playing some dance dance revolution later on. Yesterday was ok for me, I ate more then I think I needed to, definitely ate too many carbs.

breakfast:
whole wheat pasts 380
veggie burgers 200
tomato sauce 100
2 sandwich thins 200
olive oil 100

Lunch:
3 sandwich thins 300
olive oil 120
tomato sauce 50

dinner:
guacamole 350
grapes 600
------------------------
Total 2400

Today, I need to eat more vegetables. I think that will help a lot.
