hey everyone. i've been reading the forums for probably a month and finally decided to join. i'm a 19 year old college boy trying to shed a few pounds...and by a few i mean around 100. i checked my bmi and to be in my proper weight class i have to be down to 168 and i'm sitting pretty at 261 now. starting things off slow, balancing my diet better and doing cardio. just trying to change my lifestyle so i can continue eating properly when the weight is gone. thanks!

Thats the spirit Chopork - its about forcing new habits, and adopting better ways of living. Easier said than done - it needs some effort. But the efforts are worth it - you live longer, you live happier. Welcome to the boards.

Welcome! Well you found us, and that's step 1.

If you'd care to use the forum's Weight Loss Table to post your weekly weight, it's here: http://weight-loss.fitness.com/wl_table.php (click on Update Profile).

I would say for your current weight, age and guessing a height of around 5'10", you can start losing weight if you don't exceed 10 calories per pound you weigh = around 2600 per day. One calculator put your maintenance calories at 3200 another at 3600. So cutting to 2600 would give you a weight loss of 1.2-2 lbs per week.

- Can you count calories? If you can do it for a day or even a week (try fitday.com or sparkpeople.com to help you count), you'll learn alot about what you are putting in your body, and be able to accurately know how many calories you need.
- If you went to about 2000 calories per day (men shouldn't go below 1500), you'd lose an additional 1.2 lb per week.
- Start walking. It's low impact and burns roughly 100 calories per mile. Use a treadmill or go outside.
- Start weight training. If you don't have access or money for a gym, pick up some weights. Sets are pretty cheap at Academy (or look at people advertising to sell them in the paper or at craigslist.com in your area).
- Drink water. Substitute it for all the soda you drink. (You are 19, so I assume you are drinking soda!!!!)
For example:
1 can of coke = 150 calories. Drink one per day and gain 15 lbs per year.

Good luck!!!

Good Advice! You are in college so you will want to not over do the beer consumption either. Good luck and everyone is here for the support.

wow thanks for all that information. i'm actually at 6' even, so i don't know exactly where i'd be at with the daily calories. i did one calculator saying that to function properly daily, i need about 1800 calories, and i burn 2300 daily. the first thing i did actually was cut down to water and only snacking on fruits, a spoonful of peanut butter or a cup of fat-free yogurt. no worries about the alchol consumption either lol. i don't drink. i AM however a smoker which i know is terrible. that's another thing i need to work on, but i'm thinking right now, i could just try and focus on eating better and getting exercise in (i was doing 0 of it before, unless you want to count walking to and from my car to people's doors) but seriously, thank you for all this support. it's great that there's a place like this where we can all go.

Hey Justin. Welcome to the forums. Hope you will love being here as much as I do. It's a great resource for information and for guidance and support. I've never felt better than when I lost some of this weight. My bodies been holding onto it for so long and now it seems glad to let it drop off a little. Start a diary....that's always a nice way to keep track of your progress and keep yourself in check!
